Two new species of Rohdendorfia (Diptera: Syrphidae) from Central Asia

Abstract: Abstract Two new species of the flower fly genus Rohdendorfia Smirnov, 1924 (Diptera: Syrphidae) are described, Rohdendorfia bella Mengual, sp. nov. and Rohdendorfia khakimovi Barkalov, sp. nov. A full description and images of both new species are given, as well as an identification key for the species of this genus. Molecular sequences from mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase I (COI) gene and nucl… Show more

“…Eocheilosia has globular surstyli and sickleshaped postgonites, and Syrphocheilosia claviventris (Strobl, 1910) has one-lobed surstyli and elongate, one-lobed postgonites. Spazigaster ambulans (Fabricius, 1798) has sickleshaped postgonites but one-lobed surstyli, while Rohdendorfia species have one-lobed, sickle-shaped surstyli curved ventrally, and bilobed postognites with dorsal lobe hookshaped (Mengual & Barkalov, 2019). Pyrophaena rosarum (Fabricius, 1787) has sickle-shaped postgonites but broad, elongate, one-lobed surstyli.…”

“…The Indomalayan flower flies are clearly understudied. Recent taxonomic revisionary works brought to attention this fact by the high number of new species discovered (Mengual & Ghorpadé 2010;Mengual 2012Mengual , 2016van Steenis & Hippa 2012;Thompson 2013Thompson , 2015Thompson , 2017aThompson , 2017bThompson , 2020van Steenis 2014;Hippa et al 2015;van Steenis et al 2018van Steenis et al , 2019Mengual & Barkalov 2019;van Steenis & Wyatt 2020;Sankararaman et al 2022;among others). The syrphid fauna of all major biogeographic realms are covered by published Manuals of Diptera (Vockeroth & Thompson 1987;Thompson & Rotheray 1998;Thompson et al 2010;Ssymank et al 2021) and unpublished revisionary works by F.C.…”
