Two new species of Oreocharis (Gesneriaceae) from Fan Si Pan, the highest mountain in Vietnam

Abstract: Two new species of Oreocharis Benth. from Fan Si Pan, the highest mountain in Vietnam (Sa Pa) are described and illustrated. Oreocharis grandiflora W.H.Chen, Q.H.Nguyen & Y.M.Shui, is similar to O. flavida Merr. from Hainan province, China, but differs mainly by its larger and infundibuliform corolla, stamens adnate to the base of the corolla tube and stamens coherent in two pairs. The second, Oreocharis longituba W.H.Chen, Q.H.Nguyen & Y.M.Shui, is similar to O. hirsuta Barnett, endemic to northern Thailand, … Show more

“…China is a significant centre of diversity of the family Gesneriaceae, with the majority of taxa found in the South and Southwest China (Wang et al 1990(Wang et al , 1998Li 1991Li , 2005Wei et al 2010;Möller et al 2016). After long-term collaborative surveys between China and Vietnam, we not only confirmed the common species and records from two countries, but also published some new species endemic to Vietnam, especially in the adjacent region to South China (Chen et al 2017(Chen et al , 2018a(Chen et al , 2018b. Here, we describe two new taxa of Gesneriaceae in the karst regions at Xuan Son National Park in North Vietnam (Fig.…”

“…However, biodiversity studies are scarce in Vietnam. For example, the discoveries in Gesneriaceae only focused on certain genera: Oreocharis in North Vietnam ( Do et al 2016 , 2017 ; Chen et al 2017 , 2018a ; Möller et al 2018 ), Billolivia in Central Vietnam ( Middleton et al 2014a , 2014b ; Luu et al 2015 , 2018 ; Vu et al 2015 ; Nguyen et al 2016 ; Lý 2017 ) and other genera ( Deinostigma : Möller et al 2016 ; Didymocarpus : Hong et al 2018 ; Raphiocarpus : Vu et al 2012 ; Hemiboea : Chen et al 2018b ; Paraboea : Middleton 2018 ; Aeschynanthus : Middleton and Atkins 2018 ; and so on).…”

“…There are at least 30 new taxa described and published after the redefinition (Tan et al , Möller et al , Wei et al , Cai et al , , Yang et al , Möller , Pan et al , Wen et al ). Oreocharis now comprises more than 120 species and most of them are endemic to China, mainly distributed in south and southwest China, with other species occurring in North Vietnam, Myanmar, northeast India, Bhutan, Japan and Thailand (Wang et al , , Li and Wang , Möller et al , , Xu et al , Chen et al ).…”

“…Many genera and species in the family Gesneriaceae have been redefined in the past two decades based on new evidence following the development of molecular phylogenetics (Möller et al 2011(Möller et al , 2016Weber et al, 2011aWeber et al, , 2011b. Oreocharis Bentham was redefined in 2011 (Möller et al 2011), and the vast majority associated species of the other 10 genera were merged into the enlarged genera (Chen et al 2014, including some new taxa described in recent years (Cai et al 2015(Cai et al , 2017(Cai et al , 2019Chen et al 2017Chen et al , 2018Do et al 2017;Guo et al 2018;Han et al 2017;Möller 2015;Möller et al 2018;Wei et al 2016;Yang et al 2018), Oreocharis s.l. now comprises ca.…”
