Highlights of new, interesting, and emerging research findings on substratum-associated microbiota covered from a survey of 2019 literature from primarily freshwaters provide insight into research trends of interest to the Water Environment Federation and others interested in benthic, aquatic environments. Coverage of topics on bottom-associated or attached algae and cyanobacteria, though not comprehensive, includes new methods, taxa new-to-science, nutrient dynamics, auto-and heterotrophic interactions, grazers, bioassessment, herbicides and other pollutants, metal contaminants, and nuisance, and bloom-forming and harmful algae. Coverage of bacteria, also not comprehensive, focuses on the ecology of benthic biofilms and microbial communities, along with the ecology of microbes like Caulobacter crescentus, Rhodobacter, and other freshwater microbial species. Bacterial topics covered also include metagenomics and metatranscriptomics, toxins and pollutants, bacterial pathogens and bacteriophages, and bacterial physiology. The present work aims to describe the sampling design and the methods used in the series “Periphytic algal flora of the Lower Doce River basin (Espírito Santo State, Brazil) after ore tailings flow”. This series will present the biodiversity of periphytic algae registered during the Aquatic Biodiversity Monitoring Program, Environmental Area I, carried out in the Lower Doce River basin three years after the passage of the ore tailings from Fundão dam (Mariana, Minas Gerais). Samples from the periphytic community were collected monthly, between October/2018 and February/2020, at five sampling stations in lotic environments and seven in lentic environments of the basin. These samples were fixed and the taxa will be identified and described, following specific methods. These taxa will be presented in sequential fascicles, split according to their taxonomic and morphological classification. More than 900 taxa have been recorded in this survey. This is the first taxonomic study about inland algae carried out in the Lower Doce River basin.

A bstract: The actual status of the progress and the main aspects of diatom studies in Brazil remain unknown. This paper describes a survey of published studies addressing material of Brazilian origin in non-marine aquatic environments. Our objectives are to (1) summarize and categorize diatom research topics, (2) to describe how related studies evolved and developed over time, as well as respective journals, (3) to identify the most studied regions and environments, and (4) to indicate the main institutions and works addressing diatom research and related interactions. We conducted a systematic review selecting 478 studies. Since the early studies, the approach on diatom fl oristic exclusively was the most frequent, even though, ecological studies have been increasing since the 2000s. However, these concentrate in the southern and southeastern. It was only in the last decades that other Brazilian regions became the setting of more extensive samplings, thus refl ecting on the interactions between authors and institutions from the collection sites. However, the actual biodiversity scenario of diatoms in Brazil still seems to be underestimated, which may infl uence further conservation measures. Finally, we indicate some suggestions aimed at fi lling the sampling gaps presented/highlighted in this study.
