In this study, we take the Onthophagus chevrolati species group, likely a monophyletic species group as an example to analyze the processes that led to the biogeographic integration of the Holarctic fauna in the mountains of the Mexican Transition Zone to test our biogeographic hypotheses. We propose a change from the status of subspecies to species for O. oaxacanus Zunino & Halffter, 1988 new status; O. howdeni Zunino & Halffter, 1988 new status; O. jaliscensis Zunino & Halffter, 1988 new status; O. longecarinatus Zunino & Halffter, 1988 new status; O. omiltemius Bates, 1889 revised status; and O. retusus Harold, 1869 revised status. Consequently, the O. chevrolati group of species is currently made up of 47 species belonging to four species lines: O. vespertilio, O. hippopotamus, O. cyanellus and O. chevrolati. The diversification of the Onthophagus chevrolati species group in this region resulted from three hypothetical stages of evolution. In the first, the penetration and expansion of the ancestor of the O. chevrolati species group occurred before the Miocene and the Trans-Mexican Volcanic Belt arose. During the second stage, the O. hippopotamus species line expanded and evolved, integrating with the paleogeographic changes and the formation of the Trans-Mexican Volcanic Belt, as a consequence of volcanism during the Miocene-Pliocene. In the third and most recent stage, the O. chevrolati species line used the existing mountain systems and interglacial climate fluctuations of the Pleistocene to expand and diversify. Thus, the mountains of the Mexican Transition Zone are not simply periglacial refugia. The entomofauna of Holarctic origin present in the region evolved while the Earth’s geological processes were underway.

After almost two decades of stagnation, the taxonomy of the New World Scarabaeinae dung beetles has since 1988 been going through a period of great effervescence. In the last 35 years, 81 complete revisions and 69 supplements have been produced by 86 authors based in 15 countries, addressing the taxonomic status of 950 species. This is what we christen as the Taxonomic Revolution of New World dung beetles. We review the history and products of this revolution, explore its causes and its apparent exceptionalism among most other New World Coleoptera groups, and point to the many great challenges that still face the scarabaeine taxonomists. An aspect of interest to ecologists is the coevolution of the Taxonomic Revolution with what we call the Ecological Revolution of dung beetles, i.e., the similar expansion in ecological studies about these organisms. We argue that it has been the continuous feedback between these two simultaneous processes that has enabled each of them to exist and flourish: without the Ecological Revolution, the Taxonomic Revolution could not have existed, and vice-versa. Ecologists and taxonomists are partners in the scientific enterprise, symbionts one may say.

Copris incertus Say, 1835 (Coleoptera: Scarabaeidae: Scarabaeinae: Coprini) has been described as a New World coprophagous scarab distributed from Mexico to Ecuador with large discontinuities in its range between the Yucatán province and Costa Rica. The C. incertus species complex of the Copris minutus (Drury, 1773) species group consists of C. incertus, Copris laeviceps Harold, 1869, and Copris lugubris Boheman, 1858. Based on external morphology and male genitalia, we discovered that multiple species have been classified as C. incertus. Of these species, five are new: Copris amazonicusnew species, Copris brevicornisnew species, Copris davidinew species, Copris moroninew species, and Copris susanaenew species. Herein, we revise the organisation of the C. incertus species complex and propose a new species complex, the C. laeviceps species complex, which includes: C. davidi, Copris igualensis Warner, 1990, and C. laeviceps, formerly included in the C. incertus species complex. We provide an identification key along with species distribution maps, images of habitus, and diagnostic characters.
