Two new species of fungus gnats (Diptera: Mycetophilidae) from Kunashir Island, Kuril Islands

Abstract: Two new species of Mycetophilidae (Diptera), Clastobasis subalternans sp. n. and Phthinia kurilensis sp. n. are described from Kunashir I. (South Kuril Is.). Their relationships with other species of Clastobasis Skuse and Phthinia Winnertz are briefly discussed.

“…n. is very similar to Neuratelia caucasica , into which it also runs to in the key by Zaitzev (1994) because of having the foretibia slightly shorter than the fore basitarsus. Also the male terminalia of these two species are extremely similar, differ in details as follows: 1) paramers not expanded apically (Fig.…”

“…Following the key by Zaitzev (1994) the new species runs to Neuratelia sintenisi Lackschewitz, 1937, as its foretibia is usually shorter than fore-basitarsus. However, this character seems to be variable, as these are of equal length in one paratype, guiding to Neuratelia nemoralis , a species with so far reported Holarctic distribution (Laffoon 1965, Zaitzev 1994, but see specific discussion under the latter).…”

“…Zaitzev 1994, Polevoi 2001). Sciophila larvae are mostly associated with fungal fruiting bodies, especially polypores, and most likely are spore-feeding (Jakovlev 2011) or may develop internally in fungus tissue (Zaitzev 1982). Three Boletina species are figured here and discussed; a review on the taxonomic status and ecology of the Holarctic species of the genus was recently provided (Salmela et al 2016).…”
