Two new species of Daidalotarsonemus (Acari: Prostigmata: Tarsonemidae) from Brazil

Abstract: Two new tarsonemid species, Daidalotarsonemus esalqi n. sp. and Daidalotarsonemus savanicus n. sp., found on both native and crop plants in Brazil are described herein, based on adult females. Biological aspects of these species are briefly discussed. Individuals of Daidalotarsonemus savanicus n. sp. have been misidentified as Daidalotarsonemus tessellatus De Leon in previous reports of this species from Brazil. A key is provided to distinguish females of the Daidalotarsonemus species known to occur in Brazil.

Also, the new species also shares some similarities with Daidalotarsonemus azofeifai Ochoa, Rezende & Lofego, 2015 regarding: prodorsal shield having notch laterally and stigmatal opening situated on the notch; greatly modified setae d , e and f and ornamented dorsum in adult female but differs in having different patterns of embossments on prodorsal shield, tergite C, D and EF; setae e being phylliform (setae e elliptical in D. azofeifai ); setae c1 setiform and barbed (setae c1 linear with a different shape altogether with a central serrate rachis); ventrally apodemes 2 not reaching prosternal apodeme (apodemes 2 fused with prosternal apodeme); and tegular width more than twice its length (tegular width six times its length). Males of the new species also shares resemblances with males of D. azofeifai in terms of dorsally setae sc1 , c1 , d and f blunt ended; prodorsal shield being trapezoidal; setae c1 and c2 being subequal in length.…”
