Two new species and a new species record of Aglaia (Meliaceae) from Indonesia

Abstract: Two new species of Aglaia from Indonesia are described, Aglaia monocaula restricted to West Papua, and Aglaia nyaruensis occurring on Borneo (Kalimantan, Brunei, Sabah and Sarawak). A phylogenetic analysis using nuclear ITS and ETS, and plastid rps15-ycf1 sequence data indicates that the two new species of Aglaia are also genetically distinct. Aglaia monocaula belongs to sectionAmoora, while A. nyaruensis is included in section Aglaia. A dichotomous key, drawings and three-locus DNA barcodes are provided as ai… Show more

“…For some samples, ITS was amplified in two parts, ITS1 and ITS2, using primers 17S_m and ITS_R1 for ITS1, and ITS_F1 and 26SE_m for ITS2, with the same annealing temperature as for the entire ITS region (Grudinski & al., 2014a). For ETS, 18S-E (Baldwin & Markos, 1998) and MEL1 (Pannell & al., 2020) were used, with the same annealing temperature as for the ITS amplification. For the trnL-F region, PCR was done in two parts, using the primer pair trnLF_c and trnLF_d for the first part, and trnLF_e and trnLF_f (Taberlet & al., 1991) for the second part of trnL-F, with an annealing temperature of 54°C.…”

The phylogeny and biogeography of Aglaia have been the focus of several studies (Muellner & al., 2005(Muellner & al., , 2008a(Muellner & al., , 2009Muellner, 2008;Grudinski & al., 2014a,b;Heads, 2019;Pannell & al., 2020), but Dysoxylum s.l. and Chisocheton have lacked detailed phylogenetic investigation.…”

“…Researchers have been continuously enhancing the classification of the Meliaceae family through various studies ( Muellner et al 2003 , 2005 , 2009a , b ; Muellner and Mabberley 2008 ; Pennington and Muellner 2010 ; Köcke et al 2015 ; Clarkson et al 2016 ; Gama et al 2020 ). Furthermore, new species are still being uncovered and documented ( Pannell et al 2020 ). Walsura Roxb.…”
