Two new species and a new record of Perisesarma (Decapoda, Brachyura, Grapsidae, Sesarminae) from Indonesia

Abstract: Two new species and a new distributional record of the sesarmine crabs of the genus Perisesarma are recorded from a mangrove area in southwestern Irian Jaya, Indonesia. Perisesarma foresti sp. nov. and P. cricotus sp. nov. can be most easily separated from their congeners by the number, shape, and ornamentation of the cheliped dactylar tubercles. Perisesarma cricotus is also recorded from Ambon, eastern Indonesia. Perisesarma semperi (Bürger, 1894) is a rst record for Indonesia and marks a signi cant southerly… Show more

“…Moreover, there seems to be limited published data on the ways in which these faunal elements use the mangrove resources. The sesarmids are less documented in the Philippines unlike in other countries, wherein several reports are available from Singapore (Sivasothi 2000;Tan & Ng 1994;Ng & Liu 1999) Malaysia (Tan & Ng 1994;Leh & Sasekumar 1985), Indonesia (Soemodihardhjo & Soerianegara 1989;Rahayu & Davie 2002), Hong Kong (Poovatchiranon 1986;Lee & Leung 1993;Lee 1998;Lee 1997;Kwok 1995;Kwok & Tang 2005;and Ashton 2002).…”

“…They are generally colourful crabs with a squarish carapace and an anterolateral tooth (Davie, 2003). The colouration of P. samawati, P. foresti, P. cricotus, P. semperi, P. bengalense, P. samawati and P. eumolpe have been described qualitatively (Rahayu & Davie, 2002;Davie, 2003;Gillikin & Schubart, 2004;Guerao et al, 2004). Two out of the five species from Singapore's mangroves, P. indiarum (Tweedie) and P. eumolpe (De Man), exhibit bright green, yellow-green, blue or blue-green coloured facial bands (Fig.…”

“…Since colours are often associated with the parts of Perisesarma used in social interactions (Rahayu & Davie, 2002), they could be used for intra-and interspecific recognition. This has been shown for other species of grapsoids that are territorial animals (Warner, 1977) in which recognition based on interand intra-specific colour differences is likely to be important when protecting their burrows (Takeda, 2006;.…”
