Two new interesting genera of Gastrotricha (Macrodasyida and Chaetonotida) from the Brazilian freshwater psammon

Abstract: Two new genera and species of Gastrotricha are described from the psammon of a freshwater body in Brazil: Redudasys fornerise and Arenotus strixinoi. The former is the first undoubted member of the order Macrodasyida recorded from a freshwater environment. It is characterized by the reduction in number of adhesive tubes, the absence of male sexual organs and the presence of a well-developed protonephridial system. The latter belongs to the order Chaetonotida (family Chaetonotidae) and is characterized by the u… Show more

“…The other families show a limited distribution: the rare Dichaeturidae have been occasionally found in few European sites, the ditypic Proichthydiidae are only known from South America and Asia, and the subfamily Undulinae (Chaetonotidae) is reported from one site in Amazonia (see Schwank, 1990;Kisielewski, 1991). The only two freshwater monotypic genera of the order Macrodasyida, each recorded in one site, are known only in Europe and South America, respectively (RuttnerKolisko, 1955;Kisielewski, 1987). At a superspecific level, almost a half of the genera show an intercontinental distribution.…”

“…Single or few records are available for other European countries, or even none at all from Portugal [except for Azores] and Netherlands. Data from North America mainly concerns the US (see Weiss, 2001), and Canada (Schwank, 1990), whilst from Central and South America records regard Argentina (see Grosso & Drahg, 1991), Brazil (Kisielewski, 1987(Kisielewski, , 1991 and French Guyana (d 'Hondt et al, 2006). Some information is available for Colombia, Jamaica, Paraguay, Uruguay (see Schwank, 1990).…”

“…The order Macrodasyida includes only 2 freshwater species: Redudasys fornerise , belonging to the family Redudasyidae (which also comprises a marine species, see Todaro et al 2012), and Marinellina flagellata , which was previously assigned either to Macrodasyida (Ruttner-Kolisko 1955, Kisielewski 1987) or to Chaetonotida, in the freshwater family Dichaeturidae (Remane 1961) and is now considered a Macrodasyida incertae sedis . It is the only Macrodasyida species known from Europe, where it was found only once in Austria (Ruttner-Kolisko 1955).…”

“…Knowledge on species from the interstitial habitat is more scanty, and suggestive of a poorly diversified fauna, even if composed of species of great taxonomical interest (Preobrajenskaia, 1926 ;RuttnerKolisko, 1955 ;d'Hondt, 1967 ;Roszczak, 1969 ;Evans, 1982 ;Strayer, 1985 ;Balsamo & Kisielewski, 1986 ;Kisielewska & Kisielewski, 1986 ;Hummon, 1987 ;Kisielewski, 1987Kisielewski, , 1990Kisielewski, , 1991 . To date only 40 163 species of freshwater gastrotrichs have been collected in the interstitial, compared to 246 in other environments .…”
