Two New Bioactive Biphenylpropanoids from the Roots of Salsola imbricata (Chenopodiaceae) Growing in Saudi Arabia

Abstract: Phytochemical investigation of the roots of Salsola imbricata allowed to two new bioactive biphenylpropanoids (1) and (2) named, biphenylsalsonoid A and B, respectively. Their structures were established through spectroscopic methods (1D and 2D NMR, (ES)-HRMS, and IR). The isolates were tested for their antioxidant activity using DPPH• and ABTS• + assays. 1 and 2 showed a moderate activity towards DPPH (IC 50 = 86.5 ± 1.3 and 122.3 ± 0.63 mg/mL, respectively) and ABTS (IC 50 = 95 ± 1.5, 137.7 ± 1.2 mg/mL, resp… Show more

“…Ethyl acetate soluble fraction of the alcoholic extract from their roots afforded an alkaloidal phenolic, N - trans -feruloyltyramine ( 103 ), in addition to isovanillic acid ( 83 ), ferulic acid ( 90 ) and p -hydroxy benzoic acid ( 71 ) [ 71 ]. Moreover, Bi-phenylpropanoids, named biphenylsalsonoid A ( 62 ) and biphenylsalsonoid B ( 61 ), were also isolated [ 72 ].…”

“…The two compounds had a similar effectiveness against the tested bacteria, with MIC values ranging from 16 to 64 µg/mL. On the other hand, biphenylsalsonoid B ( 61 ) showed higher potency than biphenylsalsonoid A ( 62 ) against M. luteus [ 72 ].…”

“…In a recent study from Saudi Arabia, phytochemical analysis of S. imbricata showed presence of bioactive biphenylpropanoids i.e., biphenylsalsonoid A and B. These two bioactive compounds exhibited antioxidant and antibacterial activity against human pathogenic bacteria (Oueslati et al, 2017 ). Although the coastal dune environment is an unexplored source of natural compounds with diverse activities there has been little or no work on the bacterial flora of this plant.…”

“…Apart from these, there are no other reports concerning the chemical and pharmacological investigations of S. cyclophylla growing in Saudi Arabia. However, several phytoconstituents are reported from other Salsola species, e.g., flavonoids, phenolic acids [ 12 , 13 , 14 , 15 , 16 , 17 , 18 ], sterols, hydroxy-fatty acids [ 19 ], alkaloids, organic acids [ 20 ], phenylpropanoids [ 21 ], and triterpenoidal saponins [ 22 ]. Among the bioactivities, the anti-oxidant and anti-microbial [ 12 , 13 , 19 ], anti-inflammatory [ 14 ], contraceptive [ 15 ], anti-nociceptive [ 17 ], and anti-diabetic [ 18 ] activities are reported for the plants extracts, fractions, and isolated compounds.…”
