Two New and Nontoxigenic Pseudo‐nitzschia species (Bacillariophyceae) from Chinese Southeast Coastal Waters

Abstract: To explore the species diversity and toxin profile of Pseudo‐nitzschia, monoclonal strains were established from Chinese southeast coastal waters. The morphology was examined under light and transmission electron microscopy. The internal transcribed spacer region of ribosomal DNA was sequenced for phylogenetic analyses, and the secondary structure of ITS2 was predicted and compared among allied taxa. A combination of morphological and molecular data showed the presence of two new species, Pseudo‐nitzschia hain… Show more

“…The latter region, having a higher resolution than the former [ 27 ], can distinguish almost all Pseudo-nitzschia species whose sequences have been reported so far. Furthermore, sequences of several recently described species were reported with only the ITS region and not together with the LSU rDNA D1–D3 [ 13 , 15 , 28 ]. Additionally, among the 58 species, sequences of five species ( P seudo-nitzschia antarctica , P seudo-nitzschia prolongatoides , P seudo-nitzschia pungiformis , P seudo-nitzschia roundii , and P. sinica ) have not yet been determined.…”

“…The pennate diatoms Pseudo-nitzschia are cosmopolitan [ 1 , 2 , 3 ]. About 60 species are currently described, and some of them are considered toxic, i.e., able to produce a neurotoxin—domoic acid (DA) [ 4 , 5 ]. DA is transferred to various organisms within marine food webs when toxic Pseudo-nitzschia species are ingested by bivalves (mussels, oysters, scallops), zooplankton (copepods), or planktivorous fish [ 1 , 3 ].…”

“…Marine planktonic diatoms of the genus Pseudo-nitzschia are found in polar, warm and tropical regions; most of their species are cosmopolitan [1][2][3]. Currently, 56 species [4,5] of this genus have been reported, 26 of them producing the neurotoxic compound domoic acid (DA) [6]. Examination of the morphology by optical microscopy is frequently inconclusive, and for this reason scanning and/or transmission electron microscopy is also required.…”
