Two-mode PLC-based mode multi/demultiplexer for mode and wavelength division multiplexed transmission

Abstract: Abstract:We proposed a PLC-based mode multi/demultiplexer (MUX/DEMUX) with an asymmetric parallel waveguide for mode division multiplexed (MDM) transmission. The mode MUX/DEMUX including a mode conversion function with an asymmetric parallel waveguide can be realized by matching the effective indices of the LP 01 and LP 11 modes of two waveguides. We report the design of a mode MUX/DEMUX that can support C-band WDM-MDM transmission. The fabricated mode MUX/DEMUX realized a low insertion loss of less than 1.3 d… Show more

“…Here, let us consider the asymmetric coupler type mode multiplexer for TE 00 and TE 10 modes for the comparison [12]. In the asymmetric coupler, it is indispensable to strictly determine the waveguide parameters such as the waveguide width W, gap between waveguides g, and the coupler interaction length l, so that the propagation constants of two modes are equal.…”

“…Mode MUX/DEMUXs based on free-space optics [2], fiber coupler [3]- [5], photonic lanterns [6], and planar lightwave circuit (PLC) [7], [8] have been proposed. The PLC-based mode MUX/DEMUX has advantages in terms of compactness, low insertion loss, and mass productivity.…”

“…To realize MDM transmission, mode multi/demutliplexers (MUX/ DEMUXs) are important components required to multiplex and demultiplex different modes. To date, various types of mode MUX/DEMUXs have been proposed based on free-space optics [2], fiber couplers [3][4][5], photonic lanterns [6], planar lightwave circuits (PLCs) [7][8][9][10], and so on. The PLC-based mode MUX/DEMUX has desirable characteristics such as compactness, low insertion loss, and mass productivity.…”

“…Here, we define the LP11a mode as the mode that has two intensity peaks in the plane of the PLC and LP11b mode as the mode that has two intensity peaks in the vertical direction. Although the LP11a mode can be excited by using PLC-based asymmetric directional coupler (ADC) [7], the LP11b mode cannot be excited due to the different field distribution in the vertical direction. Therefore, an LP11a/LP11b mode rotator has been proposed [10,11] to excite the LP11b mode in PLC chip, as shown in Fig.…”
