Two memories for geographical slant: Separation and interdependence of action and awareness

Abstract: The present study extended previous findings of geographical slant perception, in which verbal judgments of the incline of hills were greatly overestimated but motoric (haptic) adjustments were much more accurate. In judging slant from memory following a brief or extended time delay, subjects' verbal judgments were greater than those given when viewing hills. Motoric estimates differed depending on the length of the delay and place of response. With a short delay, motoric adjustments made in the proximity of t… Show more

“…One of the more parsimonious explanations of this interaction is that two systems of spatial representation -a transient one and an enduring one -mediate performance in this paradigm. This interpretation fits well with contemporary theories of spatial cognition that posit two systems of spatial representation (Arbib, 1999;Amorim et al, 1997;Creem & Proffitt, 1998;Easton & Sholl, 1995;Gallistel, 1990;Hartley & Burgess, 2005;Huttenlocher et al, 1991;McNamara, 2003;Mou et al, 2004;Wang, 2000;Wang & Spelke, 2000).…”

“…This idea is consistent with several existing two-system theories of spatial cognition (Amorim et al, 1997;Creem & Proffitt, 1998;Huttenlocher et al, 1991) each of which contrasts a transient perceptual system that is relatively accurate and precise with an explicit cognitive system that is relatively error-prone.…”

“…One possibility is that an observer could rely on a responselearning mechanism (Nadel, 1990) grounded in an egocentric frame of reference (Klatzky, 1998). Such a mechanism would be consistent with the workings of a perception-action system as posited by Proffitt and his colleagues (Creem & Proffitt, 1998). Spatial behavior based on this system would be consistent and unbiased by contextual information, although it would be severely disrupted by changes in task demands brought about by field rotation.…”

“…On a more general level, the combination of spatial and verbal encoding can also be found in other cognitive theories (e.g., Creem & Profit, 1998;Huttenlocher, Hedges, & Duncan, 1991;Kosslyn et al, 1989). These approaches typically differentiate between a categorical and a precise, more perception-based format.…”
