Luminescent cuprous complexes are an important class of coordination compounds due to their relative abundance, low cost and ability to display excellent luminescence. The title heteroleptic cuprous complex, [2,2′-bis(diphenylphosphanyl)-1,1′-binaphthyl-κ2 P,P′](2-phenylpyridine-κN)copper(I) hexafluoridophosphate, rac-[Cu(C44H32P2)(C11H9N)]PF6, conventionally abbreviated rac-[Cu(BINAP)(2-PhPy)]PF6 (I), where BINAP and 2-PhPy represent 2,2′-bis(diphenylphosphanyl)-1,1′-binaphthyl and 2-phenylpyridine, respectively, is described. In this complex, the asymmetric unit consists of a hexafluoridophosphate anion and a heteroleptic cuprous complex cation, in which the cuprous centre in a CuP2N coordination triangle is coordinated by two P atoms from the BINAP ligand and by one N atom from the 2-PhPy ligand. Time-dependent density functional theory (TD–DFT) calculations show that the UV–Vis absorption of I should be attributed to ligand-to-ligand charge transfer (LLCT) characteristic excited states. It was also found that the paper-based film of this complex exhibited obvious luminescence light-up sensing for pyridine.

The design and research of luminescent and volatile organic compound (VOC) fluorescent sensing materials are of great significance and challenge. We report herein the ligand substitution reaction and VOC sensing of new heteroleptic [Cu(P˄P)N2]+ type copper(I) complexes. Firstly, three new complexes 1–3 were designed by utilizing a chelate diphosphine ligand 4,5‐bis(diphenylphosphino)‐9,9‐dimethylxanthene (Xantphos) and synthesized by the substitution reaction of different N‐containing ligands of 4‐PBO (1), 3‐PBO (2), and 4,4′‐Bipy (3) (4‐PBO = 2‐(4′‐pyridyl)‐benzoxazole, 3‐PBO = 2‐(3′‐pyridyl)‐benzoxazole, 4,4′‐Bipy = 4,4′‐bipyridine), respectively. Three complexes were characterized by elemental analysis, spectroscopic analysis (IR, UV–Vis), single‐crystal X‐ray diffraction (SCXRD), and photoluminescence study. The SCXRD study revealed that complexes 1 and 2 both exhibit a molecular structure with tetrahedral copper(I) complex cation and hexafluorophosphate anion, while complex 3 differs in that its cation is a binuclear copper(I) structure bridged by 4,4′‐bipyridine. Three complexes 1–3 present supramolecular ribbon, supramolecular dimer, and supramolecular framework structure, respectively. Some differences of their UV–Vis absorption spectra were explained by TD‐DFT calculation and wavefunction analysis. It is found that 1 has an abnormal luminescence blue shift, and a luminescence mechanism through the high‐energy T2 excited state is proposed by TD‐DFT calculation. Based on 3, a fluorescent test strip was developed, and its fast and selective fluorescent sensing of pyridine vapor through quenching mechanism was successfully realized. The fluorescent quenching mechanism of the material was also studied, and it was proposed that the quenching should be attributed to the photoinduced electron transfer (PET) mechanism.

Cu(I) complexes have garnered substantial attention in recent years because of their intriguing photophysical properties and their applications in different fields. Herein, we have reported a new four‐coordinated heteroleptic Cu(I) complex using dicnq, a 1,10‐phenanthroline‐based cyno‐substituted ligand, and Xantphos, a bulky as well as rigid chelating diphosphine ligand. The synthesized complex is characterized by multinuclear NMR and HRMS and described as [Cu (Xantphos)(dicnq)]PF6 (1). Complex 1 exhibits absorption within the range of 380–500 nm and emits around 700 nm, attributed to the metal‐to‐ligand charge transfer transition. Theoretical calculations suggest that the HOMO is predominantly located on the Cu(I) center, whereas LUMO is associated with the dicnq ligand. Further, 1 was found to show vapochromic behavior and blue‐shifted emission was observed in the presence of solvent vapors which can show π–π interaction with dicnq. Notably, the complex demonstrates electrochromic activity, prompting the fabrication of a device (ITO/P3HT/Cu complex/ITO) for an in‐depth exploration of its electrochromic properties. The working potential range for the device was found to be ±3 V. On and Off states show the device has an impressive contrast ratio of ~40% and 38% at 520 and 800 nm, respectively. In addition to this, the device shows rapid coloration and bleaching times of 0.8 and 0.5 s, respectively. In terms of contrast, switching speed, stability, and efficiency values at two different wavelengths, the device shows good electrochromic results.
