There are diseases that cannot be cured by conventional therapies.In Japan, more than 90% of medical practitioners treat patients with alternative medicines such as Kampo medicine (herbal medicine based on Japanese Kampo theory) or traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) that do not respond to conventional treatments.The author also treated these patients suffering from cardiovascular diseases, vasculitis diseases, nephrosis, hyperlipidemia, and female disorders including menstruation disorders, incurable pain diseases such as glossodynia and herpes zoster or herpes virus infectious diseases, and other diseases such as female-related ones and diseases that need five-face theory to cure and the administration of gui-zhi-fu-ling-wan (桂枝茯苓丸) before aspiration biopsy, in breast cancer patient, to raise the detection rate of cancer cells.Interestingly, diseases specified as "intractable diseases" by the Japanese Ministry of Health, Labor, and Welfare sometimes respond to TCM treatment quite successfully, probably because TCM and Kampo medicine systems have their own theories and their own medicines quite different from that of conventional therapies.Finally, I often experienced plural number of prescriptions for the problematic organs (based on five element theory) administered simultaneously often lead to dramatical improvement. This will mean problematic organs treated simultaneously will lead to quick recovery through synergistic actions among organs. The successfully treated clinical courses after the administration of TCM or Kampo medicines are described here.

Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a highly disabling disease that affects all structures of the joint and significantly impacts on morbidity and mortality in RA patients. RA is characterized by persistent inflammation of the synovial membrane lining the joint associated with infiltration of immune cells. Eighty to 90% of the leukocytes infiltrating the synovia are neutrophils. The specific role that neutrophils play in the onset of RA is not clear, but recent studies have evidenced that they have an important participation in joint damage and disease progression through the release of proteolytic enzymes, reactive oxygen species (ROS), cytokines, and neutrophil extracellular traps, in particular during frustrated phagocytosis of immune complexes (ICs). In addition, the local and systemic activation of the complement system contributes to the pathogenesis of RA and other IC-mediated diseases. This review discusses (i) the participation of Fcγ and complement receptors in mediating the effector functions of neutrophils in RA; (ii) the contribution of the complement system and ROS-dependent and ROS-independent mechanisms to joint damage in RA; and (iii) the use of plant extracts, dietary compounds, and isolated natural compounds in the treatment of RA, focusing on modulation of the effector functions of neutrophils and the complement system activity and/or activation.

BackgroundThe Japanese medical system is unique because it is the only country in the world where Western medicine and traditional Japanese medicine including Kampo medicine, traditional Japanese herbal medicine, are used in our daily clinical practice. Pain is essentially an interactive psychophysiological behavior pattern. Thus, an interdisciplinary approach is often recommended in providing appropriate therapeutic care for the patients suffering from chronic and intractable pain. In addition, we have been prescribing Kampo medicines in combination with Western medicines as personalized medicine in order to treat patients with chronic pain at our pain center. The aim of our study was to conduct a survey on the current use and the effect of Kampo medicines in our multidisciplinary pain center.MethodsRetrospective analysis was performed on 221 out of 487 patients suffering from chronic pain.ResultsThe most frequent medical complaints for which Kampo medicines were prescribed were lower back/lower limb pain, neck/upper limb pain, various facial pains, headache/migraine, whiplash-associated disorder, and frozen shoulder. Kampo medicines were prescribed based on patient-centered Kampo diagnosis. Moreover, several Kampo medicines generally for the management of psychological symptoms were prescribed for about 70% of the patients. Pain improvement in the patients was categorized as follows: 26.3% with marked improvement, 12.7% with moderate improvement, 38.9% with some improvement, and 19.9% with no improvement.ConclusionsTwo thirds of the chronic pain patients with the use of Kampo medicines combined with Western medicine experienced further pain improvements.
