Two iridovirus isolates from Carassius auratus (L.)

Abstract: Two new viruses, goldfish virus-1 (GFV-1) and goldfish virus-2 (GFV-2), were isolated from swimbladder cultures prepared from healthy Carassius auratus (L.). The isolates were sensitive to pH, heat, and chloroform but stable to freezing and thawing. Treatment with IUDR, Feulgen staining and acridine orange staining indicated that the viruses contain double-stranded DNA. Electron microscopy revealed enveloped virions of 180 nm enclosing icosahedral capsids of 120 nm. Viral growth was studied by light and electr… Show more

“…These agents possess morphological, biochemical and serological characteristics in common with the amphibian iridovirus FV-3 , Hedrick et al 1992a, Hengstberger et al 1993 but not with either WSIV or FDLV. These systemic agents, including EHNV, sheatfish iridovirus and red sea bream lridovirus (RSIV), proliferate rapidly over a broad range of temperatures and cell lines (Berry et al 1983, Langdon et al 1986, Ogawa et al 1990, Nakajima et al 1995. Rapid cell death and budding from plasma membranes allows viral transmission from infected cells and infected hosts (Hengstberger et al 1993).…”

“…A number of iridoviruses have been found in fish, but only 4, fish lymphocystis disease virus (FLDV), EHNV, goldfish virus (GFV) and sheatfish virus, appear to have been isolated and characterised (Berry et al 1983, Langdon & Humphrey 1987, Ahne et al 1989. FLDV is distinct from the ranaviruses, GFV and EHNV (Essani & Granoff 1989, Eaton et al 1991.…”

“…These include lymphocystis virus (Wolf et al, 1966), erythrocytic necrosis virus (Appy et al, 1976), cod iridovirus (Jensen et al, 1979), goldfish iridovirus (Berry et al, 1983), carp gill necrosis iridovirus (Shchelkunov and Shchelkunova, 1984), redfin perch iridovirus (Langdon et al, 1986(Langdon et al, , 1988Langdon and Humphrey, 1987) and sheatfish iridovirus (Ahne et al, 1991). In Singapore, an iridovirus has been implicated in a novel disease, "Sleepy Grouper Disease" in brownspotted grouper Epinephelus tauvina (Chua et al, 1994).…”
