Two genes that encode ribosomal‐protein S6 kinase homologs are induced by cold or salinity stress in Arabidopsis thaliana

Abstract: We have isolated two closely related cDNA clones (cATPKI9 and cATPK6) with homology to protein-serine/threonine kinases from Arabidopsis thaliana using the polymerase chain reaction (PCR). The deduced amino acid sequences of the ATPK19 and ATPK6 contain all 11 conserved regions of the catalytic domain of protein kinases, and have homology to p70 ribosomal $6 kinases (52%). ATPK19 and ATPK6 have putative PEST regions in their N-and C-terminal regions, and these regions also contain putative phosphorylation site… Show more

“…Among these, the expression of the zinc finger, 7 of the MYB and 1 of the MADS were up-regulated. Protein-serine/threonine kinases are one of the key kinases in ABA signal transduction pathway, regulating the activity of some protein by the phosphorylation (Mizoguchi et al, 1995;Brock et al, 2010;Roskoski, 2010). The up-regulated expression of the protein-serine/threonine kinases in low temperature stress reveals that ABA signal transduction pathway participates in the low temperature stress at seedling establishment stage.…”

“…2,10,35,37,40 With the exception of RPS6K family members, most of the metazoan kinases phosphorylating H3S10 do not appear to be conserved in the plant lineage. 16 Interestingly, environmental stresses enhance the activity of two A. thaliana RPS6K homologs 41 and, in both tobacco and A. thaliana cell lines, H3S10 phosphorylation has been observed to increase in response to high salinity or cold treatment. 8,42 In interphase nuclei of A. thaliana plants grown under normal conditions, H3S10ph also appears to be associated with heterochromatin.…”

“…Arabidopsis harbors two closely related homologs of mammalian S6Ks: AtS6K1 and AtS6K2 (Zhang et al, 1994;Mizoguchi et al, 1995). Mutational analysis suggests that Arabidopsis S6K single mutants show different expression patterns and stress sensitivity (Henriques et al, 2010).…”
