Two-dimensional speckle tracking echocardiography: standardization efforts based on synthetic ultrasound data

Abstract: Whether these results can be extrapolated to the clinical setting is the topic of an ongoing study of the EACVI/ASE/Industry Task Force to standardize deformation imaging. This study was an important first step in the development of generally accepted tools for QA of speckle tracking echocardiography.

“…5.a we plot the observed R 2 values of the real data for the first two PCA modes along with the synthetic R 2 curves for the same PCA modes. We can see that the noise factor is around 10%, which coincides with the results obtained by D'hooge et al in [10]. We have also compared the regression results when different types of measurements are used as predictors.…”

“…A dedicated software package for two‐dimensional speckle tracking strain analysis (XStrain ™ , Esaote, Florence, Italy), validated for both synthetic ultrasound and in vivo data as part of the initiative to standardize deformation imaging as promoted by ASE and European Association of Cardiovascular Imaging, was used to quantify both ENDO and EPI strains.…”

“…The ratio between the E-wave velocity of the pulsed-wave Doppler mitral flow image and the average of early diastolic velocity from the septum and lateral side of the mitral annulus (E′ wave) on tissue Doppler imaging was used as a marker for filling pressures. 22 A dedicated software package for two-dimensional speckle tracking strain analysis (XStrain™, Esaote, Florence, Italy), validated for both synthetic ultrasound 23 and in vivo data 24 as part of the initiative to standardize deformation imaging as promoted by ASE and European Association of Cardiovascular Imaging, was used to quantify both ENDO and EPI strains.…”

“…This semi-recent technique has been widely demonstrated as a sensitive marker of LV dysfunction and patient outcomes. However recent reports have pointed out its high inter-vendor variability 25 encouraging the learned society of echocardiography to focus on homogenizing the type of stored data used to quantify left ventricular strain. We believe that a similar reflection should be carried out on measurements based on flow color Doppler data.…”
