Two-Dimensional Simulations of Contaminant Currents in Stratified Reservoir

Abstract: BSTRACT: A~unsteady~wo-dimens~onal (20) reservoir hydrodynamics and transport model is employed to slm~late contammate~denSity cu~ents m the Shasta Reservoir after a chemical spill into the Sacramento River, Cahf. Three flow regimes (plungmg flow, underflow, and interflow) and their occurrence are captured by the laterally~verag~d model. Transp~~and mixing processes in the temperature-stratified reservoir are analyzed through simulatIOns of flow velOCities, water temperature, and contaminant concentration. Flo… Show more

“…There are many reports about the harm-ful effects of suspended particles in freshwater ecosystems, including how the fate and transport routes of nutrients and toxic substances may be directed by the presence of SS (e.g., Hakanson 1999), how SS may be an energy source (e.g., Wetzel 2001) and how SS influences transparency and primary production (e.g., Hakanson and Boulion 2002). As a result, density currents with high SS concentration may have significant effects on the water quality of reservoirs, especially when a reservoir is stratified (Kim et al 1984, Chung andGu 1998).…”

“…Many researchers have treated the stratified reservoir, density plunging and divergence flow released on a sloping bottom in laboratory conditions (Akiyama and Stefan, 1984;Alavian, 1986;Choi and Garcia, 2002;Chung and Gu, 1998;Dallimore et al, 2004;Hauenstein and Dracos, 1984;Parker et al, 1987;Savage and Brimberg, 1975;Singh and Shah 1971). Some of them have established a number of semi empirical equations.…”
