Two‐Dimensional Silica Sieve Plates Mimicking the Diatom Valve

Abstract: Sieve and take: A biomimetic strategy was designed to fabricate two-dimensional silica sieve plates (SSP) by use of catanionic surfactants as composite template and L-tartrate with hydroxyl and carboxyl groups as regulator. Tartrate was found to combine two capabilities in the formation of SSP structures: the connection of adjacent silica structures through H bonding and the separation of adjacent structures through electrostatic repulsion.

“…Although in vitro silication techniques have not yet fully achieved the high degree structural control observed in biological silicas, a number of robust techniques have been developed which are able to induce the production of a variety of nonspherical ordered silica morphologies. ,,,,,,,,, As an example, hollow silica nanospheres have significant applications in drug delivery and as general molecular cargo carriers. , Hollow nanospheres were synthesized through the templating effect of multimolecular assembles of block copeptides or polyamines micelles. ,, In basic pH, lysozyme-mediated silication under sonication can also produce hollow silica nanospheres. , …”

“…Therefore, hydrogen bonding is the only mechanism that is responsible for the interaction between silicate species and BC nanobers, which is consistent with a previous report. 30 As a result, it can be speculated that the hydroxyl groups on BC act as not only a template but also a catalyst which catalyze the hydrolysis and condensation of silica precursors under ambient conditions and near-neutral pH.
