Two-Dimensional Self-Organization of Phthalocyanine and Porphyrin:  Dependence on the Crystallographic Orientation of Au

Abstract: By immersing Au substrate into a benzene solution containing both cobalt(II) phthalocyanine (CoPc) and copper(II) tetraphenyl-21H,23H-porphine (CuTPP), a two-dimensional alternate bimolecular structure was formed on the reconstructed Au(100)-(hex) surface.

“…For MPcs, CoPc, CuPc, and ZnPc adlayers were prepared in the same manner. 87 The same phenomena were observed for the brightness of the central spots. However, the adlayer structures obtained in solution were different from those obtained in UHV, suggesting that MPc adlayers formed on Au(111) surfaces depend on the deposition condition.…”

“…The square unit cell (side length b 1 = b 2 = 14.3 AE 0.2 ) we observe, agrees with observations of related metal-TPP molecules on close-packed noble metal surfaces. [23,24] The isostructural intramolecular features in the Fe-TPyP-and Fe-TPP-layers are a strong indication that in both cases genuine Fe II -porphyrin species are present. The appearance of the Fe-porphyrins revealing an apparent symmetry break characterized by the pronounced protrusions along the molecular axis, is associated with a nonplanar geometry of the porphyrin macrocycle.…”

“…Adlayer structures of both thiol 41,42,64,75 and nonthiol containing molecules [29][30][31]44,[50][51][52][53][54]76 have been found to display notable electrochemical potential dependence, suggesting that the electrochemical potential is a key controlling parameter in the monolayer formation. The main objective of the present communication is to illustrate potential dependent SAM structures and formation processes by examples of SAM structures at atomically flat single-crystal gold surfaces in aqueous solution.…”
