Two-dimensional numerical modeling of flood wave propagation in an urban area due to Ürkmez dam-break, İzmir, Turkey

Abstract: This study investigated flood inundation in an urban area due to a possible failure of Ü rkmez Dam in İzmir, Turkey. The estimation of flood hydrograph upon partial failure of the dam and routing of the flood hydrograph along the narrow valley downstream were first performed by the one-dimensional hydraulic routing model HEC-RAS. The twodimensional hydraulic routing model FLO-2D is then used to simulate the spreading of the dam-break flood after the flood wave exits the valley. Land use and land cover digital … Show more

“…FLO-2D, a two-dimensional flood routing model to simulate run-off over a system of square grid elements was used to map the inundation areas (Haltas et al, 2016). The model is capable of numerically routing a flood hydrograph while predicting the area of inundation and simulating flood wave attenuation.…”

“…In this approach extremely large flood discharges from dambreak compensates the inadequacy due to modeling a valley with relatively steep topography using 2D model at a medium grid resolution. It is also possible to model the flood routing along the valley using the 1D model and in the floodplain using the 2D model as applied in Haltas et al (2016) especially for the Porsuk Dam site, yet that would result in inhomogeneous model results between the valley and the floodplain and not preferred in this study. …”

“…FLO-2D is a two-dimensional flood routing model that was used to simulate flood inundations for the current and future climate conditions. FLO-2D, which simulates runoff over a system of square grid elements, was used to map inundation areas [43]. This model is capable of numerically routing a flood hydrograph while predicting the area of inundation and simulating flood wave attenuation.…”
