Two-dimensional echocardiographic features of atrial septal aneurysms.

Abstract: SUMMARY Aneurysms of the interatrial septum are rare. They have been associated with complications such as embolic phenomena and atrioventricular orifice obstruction. We describe two patients, one adult and one child, with atrial septal aneurysms that were diagnosed by real-time, two-dimensional echocardiography. Atrial septal aneurysms appeared as thin, localized outpouchings of the atrial septum that protruded into the right atrium and showed marked variations in their contour and size during the cardiac cyc… Show more

“…13,14) Atrial septal aneu-rysms are associated with increased incidences of systemic and cerebrovascular embolic events. 15,16) The association of MVP and interatrial septal aneurysm appears to be particularly important in that this subset of patients has an increased likelihood of cerebrovascular embolic events. 17) Cardiac thrombosis is a rare finding of Behçet's disease.…”

“…12 Care was taken to differentiate these findings from a nonlocalized bulge of the entire septum 21 or from atrial structures such as tumor, thrombus, Eustachian valve, or Chiari's net. 7 " Echo contrast studies were performed by injecting agitated paraben-preserved saline solution through a 20-or 18-gauge plastic catheter inserted into an antecubital vein. 22 A shunt was defined as the appearance of contrast in the left atrium within 4 beats of its appearance in the right.…”
