Two DevBCA‐like ABC transporters are involved in the multidrug resistance of the cyanobacterium Anabaena sp. PCC 7120

Abstract: The filamentous heterocyst‐forming cyanobacterium Anabaena sp. PCC 7120 is an important model organism for studying cell differentiation, nitrogen fixation, and photosynthesis. This cyanobacterium possesses a high number of membrane transporters. Not much is known about the roles of the membrane transporters, especially the ATP‐binding cassette (ABC) transporters, in the multidrug resistance of this cyanobacterium. In the present work, we performed a mutational analysis of the genes alr4280/alr4281/alr4282 and… Show more

“…While some of these have partially overlapping functions and are involved in heterocyst-specific roles, at least some of these DevBCA paralogues such as the tripartite pumps formed of the gene products of alr4280/alr4281/alr4282 and alr3647/ alr3648/alr3649 that code for the components of putative MacB-like ABC exporters have been shown to be essential for resistance to a range of different drugs and efflux of ethidium bromide, while having no demonstrable role in heterocyst development. 564 In addition, the YbbAP is a poorly characterized member of the MacB-family in E. coli, 419 where ybbA encodes the predicted NBD subunit and ybbP encodes the predicted permease subunit of this putative exporter complex. Although association with heavy metal export has been suggested, 418 this member of the family remains poorly understood.…”

“…The HgdD OMF protein is central to secretion and efflux in Anabaena , as it has been shown to pair with at least seven different DevBCA paralogues, with varied functions. While some of these have partially overlapping functions and are involved in heterocyst-specific roles, at least some of these DevBCA paralogues such as the tripartite pumps formed of the gene products of alr4280/alr4281/alr4282 and alr3647/alr3648/alr3649 that code for the components of putative MacB-like ABC exporters have been shown to be essential for resistance to a range of different drugs and efflux of ethidium bromide, while having no demonstrable role in heterocyst development …”

“…Interestingly, YbbA belongs to MacB-like ABC transporters but does not form tripartite pumps and seems to be involved in lipoprotein export. MacB-like ABC transporters have been shown to be essential for drug resistance in cyanobacterium . The trimethylated residue of YbbA is within the MacB-like ATP-binding domain.…”
