Two constructed wetlands within a Mediterranean natural park immersed in an agrolandscape reduce most heavy metal water concentrations and dampen the majority of pesticide presence

Abstract: The water concentrations of 12 heavy and other metals/metalloids were analyzed seasonally along two horizontal-flow constructed wetlands (CWs) (Tancat Mília—TM and Tancat l’Illa—TLI) located within the Mediterranean Albufera de València Natural Park during 2020–2021. A wide-scope screening of pesticides present in waters was also performed. The two CWs were created to improve water quality and increase biodiversity. They currently receive effluent waters from two different tertiary-treatment wastewater plants,… Show more

“…We selected three active substances (Table 2) that are regularly applied by farmers in the rice paddies of the Albufera Natural Park. The insecticide acetamiprid, the fungicide azoxystrobin, and the herbicide MCPA were selected to show the applicability and integration of different pesticides types into the approach developed previously by Calvo et al (2021) and Rodrigo et al (2022). Acetamiprid and azoxystrobin are usually applied at the beginning of July, whereas azoxystrobin is applied at the end of July and the beginning of August (Martínez-Megías et al, 2023).…”

“…Additional risk reduction measures, such as the replacement of highly hazardous substances, the incorporation of integrated pest management practices or the construction of constructed wetlands can limit pesticide emissions to surrounding water bodies (Alexoaei et al, 2022;Martín et al, 2020;Pavlidis & Karasali, 2020;Silva et al, 2022). A recent study by Rodrigo et al (2022) shows that two constructed wetlands located next to rice production areas can reduce metal loads and the number of pesticides entering the Albufera Lake. Further studies should be developed to calculate pesticide transport in the drainage ditches of the ANP and potential risks for aquatic communities in the Albufera Lake under different weather and pesticide management scenarios.…”

“…promoting biodiversity, improving water quality, contributing to flooding protection, etc.). Two of these services are considered crucial: the maintenance and enhancement of biological diversity (Zhang et al, 2020) and the improvement in the quality of the received water through the removal of suspended material, microalgae (mainly those potentially toxic), nutrients and hazardous substances (Rodrigo et al, 2013a(Rodrigo et al, , 2022Land et al, 2016;Jamion et al, 2022). This is of special relevance when the CWs are acting as intermediaries between low-quality waters and protected wetlands, the latter being the receptor system (Kadlec & Wallace, 2008).…”
