“…Although there is a superficial similarity between the N distributions in soil and protein hydrolysates, the only valid conclusion is that acid hydrolysates of soil contain ammonia and amino compounds which yield N 2 on treatment with nitrous acid at room temperature. Several aminoacids have been isolated, from soil; leucine and isoleucine (Robinson, 1911), arginine and histidine (Schreiner & Shorey, 1910a) and lysine (Shorey, 1913). Suzuki (1906-8) isolated alanine, leucine, aspartic acid and other amino-acids from the acid hydrolysate of a 'humic acid' preparation by Fischer's esterification method.…”
