Female sex pheromone gland extracts of Sparganothis pilleriana contain E‐9‐dodecenyl acetate, E‐ll‐tetradecenyl acetate, Z‐ll‐tetradecenyl acetate and saturated acetates of 12 to 24 carbons. Addition of E‐9‐dodecen‐l‐ol to the blend of the three unsaturated acetates is necessary to obtain maximum male catch. Zusammenfassung Das Sexualpheromon von Sparganothis pilleriana Weibliche Sexualpheromondrüsen des Springwurmwicklers S. pilleriana enthalten E‐9‐Dodecenylacetat, E‐ll‐Tetradecenylacetat und Z‐ll‐Tetradecenylacetat neben gesättigten Acetaten mit 12 bis 24 Kohlenstoffeinheiten. Die beste Lockwirkung auf Männchen des Springwurmwicklers wird erzielt, wenn man dem Gemisch der drei ungesättigten Acetate E‐9‐Dodecen‐l‐ol zufügt, welches als elektrophysiologisch hoch wirksam bekannt ist, aber in den Drüsen nicht nachgewiesen werden konnte.

Selected primary (Z)-alkenals and (Z)-alkenyl acetates (odd-numbered unsaturation positions, even-numbered carbon chains C10–C16) were field tested in three groups for ability to attract male moths into traps. Within each group all possible combinations (1:1:1) of components were examined. From 441 combinations, consistent attractants for 47 species were found. In one case three components were required for attractancy, while in others two or one were minimally sufficient. Possible trapping inhibitors were revealed for most of the species taken. Of the captured species 44 were noctuids, two were tortricids, and one was a gelechiid.

The present study is the first chemical identification of an aldehyde sex pheromone for a sparganothine species although in field screening tests Sparganothis pilleriana was attracted to ZI 1-14:Ald (Ando et al 1978). Other moth species from other tribes in the Tortricidae also use aldehyde sex pheromones including several that occur in Canadian forests, some of which are synchronic and sympatric.…”

Can. Ent. 115: 189-194 (1983) Pheromone gland rinses of female maple leaf roller moths were analyzed by capillary gas chromatography and found to contain (2)-1 1 -tetradecenal, (E)-1 1-tetradecenal, tetradecanal, (2)-1 1 -tetradecenyl acetate, (E)-1 1 -tetradecenyl acetate, and tetradecyl acetate in the average ratio of 33:20:8:21:17:2 for single female analysis and 31:16:6:16:27:3 for a pooled extract of 55 females. Identity of the tetradecenals, the tetradecenyl and tetradecyl acetates was confirmed by gas chromatography/mass spectrometry. Electroantennogram analysis indicated that (2)-1 1-tetradecenal followed by (E)-11-tetradecenal were the most stimulating compounds tested. In field tests, only three components (2)-1 1-tetradecenal, (E)-1 1 -tetradecenal and (2)-1 1 -tetradecenyl acetate, in the microgram ratio of 65:35:10, were necessary for optimum attraction. Another tortricid moth, Archips griseus, was attracted to some of the aldehyde mixtures. Sur le terrain, un mClange de trois des composCs seulement, soit 65 pg de (2)-tetradkcbne-11-al, 35 pg de (E)-tCtradCcbne-11-a1 et 10 pg d'acttate de (2)-tetradCcbne-11-01-1, s'est rCvClC le meilleur attractif. Une autre tortricide, Archips griseus, a Cte attirCe par certains melanges d'aldkhydes.
