Two-colour studies of the even-parity autoionization series 5p51/2nell′(ell = p, f) in atomic xenon

Abstract: Two-colour experiments combining synchrotron radiation and light pulses from a synchronized linear dye laser have been performed to investigate even-parity Xe* 5p5(2P1/2) np′ and nf′ resonances of atomic xenon. These autoionization states have been reached through a double-resonant excitation scheme including the short-lived intermediate states Xe* 5p5(2P3/2) 5d and 6d. Our theoretical results reproduce the experimental findings, especially the observed dramatic suppression of the np′ resonances, by taking int… Show more

“…The 5d-4f 0 excitation leads to an asymmetric profile with a q-parameter of 3.4, whereas the 6s-4f 0 shows an almost symmetrical profile indicating that the resonant excitation is much stronger than the direct ionization process. The experimental values are well reproduced by theoretical results [41], which underline the importance of configuration mixing in the intermediate states. That at least the 6s intermediate state has to be described by a mixed configuration is already obvious from the observation of the s-f transition.…”

“…the much stronger intensity of the SU line compared to the ML, but did not give the correct energy dependence in the region close to threshold. The experimental investigations [41] could verify in this case the theoretical predictions. More interesting is the energy dependence of the CSU Li + 1s4s satellites (Fig.…”

“…4 Recently, Meyer and co-workers published a two-color photoionization study combining synchrotron radiation and light pulses from a synchronized dye laser to investigate the autoionization of Xe * resonances. 5 A double excitation scheme was employed using the shortlived intermediate states of Xe * . Very recently, Lee et al studied the two-photon double-resonant photoionization of Ar and Xe to autoionizing Rydberg states lying between the 2 P 3/2 and 2 P 1/2 thresholds with the combination of a femtosecond Ti:sapphire laser system and vacuum ultraviolet ͑VUV͒ synchrotron radiation.…”

“…The data for the widths and profile indices give further challenges for ab initio theoretical calculations: the recent configuration interaction polarizedcore semirelativistic calculations of reduced widths [31] deviate significantly from the measured values, while the profile indices, which need even more sophisticated calculations, are not available in the literature.…”
