Two case reports of synchronous unilateral pleomorphic adenoma and cystadenolymphoma of the parotid gland with literature review

Abstract: Background: Synchronous unilateral tumors in the parotid glands account for less than 5–10% of all salivary gland neoplasms. Mostly these are cystadenolymphomas, but tumors of different histological types can be found as well. In these cases it is often pleomorphic adenoma in combination with cystadenolymphoma. Ultrasound is the first choice imaging modality. Case report: We present two patients with two simultaneous tumors in a unilateral parotid gland. In each case, B-mode u… Show more

“…Warthin's tumours were the most common benign lesions found in 201 (42.4%) parotid glands followed by pleomorphic adenomas in 138 (29.1%) of these cases. In two patients, both WT and PA were evident simultaneously in their histological examinations and were excluded from further comparisons [5]. Moreover, 12 patients had bilateral WT, whereas no patients with bilateral PA were identified.…”

“…Warthin's tumors tend to occur multifocally and if this is the case, usually a subtotal or total parotidectomy is necessary [75]. The most common combination of multiple synchronous parotid tumors are multiple Warthin's tumors, but other combinations are also possible and need to be assessed carefully [76]. Furthermore, Warthin's tumors tend to cause local inflammation that complicate surgery and might necessitate a more extended surgical technique [77,78].…”

“…Instead of using FNAC, they employed elastography (Virtual Touch Imaging Quantification, VTIQ) as an additional diagnostic tool. In this way, the physical stiffness, which can be used as a potential marker for malignancy, was successfully assessed and interpreted prior to surgery [ 22 ].…”

“…In the course of multiple parotid tumors, a possible combination of a benign neoplasm with a malignant lesion, in most of the cases a Warthin tumor and mucoepidermoid carcinoma, should be considered [ 22 , 23 ]. Ochal-Choinska et al provided a comprehensive literature overview of known cases of simultaneous, unilateral parotid gland tumors of benign and malignant histology [ 24 ].…”
