Two-Body Wear And Surface Roughness of Three Different Ceramic Systems And Their Enamel Antagonist: An In Vitro Study

Abstract: Statement of the problem: Ceramics and glass-ceramics are materials of choice for dental crowns due to their attractive hardness, biocompatibility, etc. However, a major problem with their usage is the observed high wear of either the opposing dental enamel or both the enamel and ceramic itself. Objective: The present study aimed at ranking and comparing the wear performance of three different ceramic systems as an indication of wear. In addition, change in surface roughness was calculated using optical surfac… Show more

“…The teeth which were caries free, non attrited and were in healthy state were selected for present study preventing variability among teeth specimens which is in accordance with studies done by Hassan S,Gad N (2017). 31 Teeth were then mounted in autopolymerising acrylic resin of dimensions 15mm length x 10mm width x10mm thickness in accordance with Rupawala A et al (2017). 32 These teeth specimens served as pin in pin on disc wear testing apparatus.…”

“…51 This contradicts our findings as Suprinity had Ra mean value of 0.25 µm but its antagonist showed high wear compared to the antagonists of the other tested materials which may be attributed to the higher hardness of Suprinity. 52 In addition, the existence of zirconia as a reinforcing agent in the glassy phase (8-12%), supposedly strengthened the material through a crack interruption mechanism under cyclic loading using a chewing simulator. Zirconia transformed from the metastable tetragonal phase to a stable monoclinic phase with an increase in grain volume, which hindered crack development and propagation thus impeding fragmentation and consequent roughness.…”
