Two analogy strategies: the cases of mind metaphors and introspection

Abstract: Analogical reasoning is often employed in problem-solving and metaphor interpretation. This paper submits that, as a default, analogical reasoning addressing these different tasks employs different mapping strategies: In problem-solving, it employs analogymaximising strategies (like structure mapping, Gentner & Markman 1997); in metaphor interpretation, analogy-minimising strategies (like ATT-Meta, Barnden 2015). The two strategies interact in analogical reasoning with conceptual metaphors. This interaction le… Show more

“…These differences clearly do not arise from differences in phrase length or word frequency: 'has overcome' is the longest phrase, and 'overcome' the least frequent word. Higher reading times for 'turned from' in 'aware'-than 'see'-sentences might arise from activation, by 'turned from', of the conceptual metaphor looking-at as thinking-about (Fischer 2018). This would lead to a perceived conflict between, e.g.…”

“…Horne and Livengood 2017), recent calls for an 'experimental philosophy 2.0' (Nado 2016) have suggested that research in this strand should (a) be refocussed on the examination of specific cognitive processes that underpin philosophical thought (building on, e.g. Nichols and Knobe 2007), (b) deploy the resulting understanding of how specific processes work, to develop 'epistemological profiles', which indicate under which conditions we may (not) trust the processes' outputs (Weinberg 2015(Weinberg , 2016, and (c) employ such profiles to assess a wider range of outputs: not only intuitive judgments but also inferences in arguments (Fischer andEngelhardt 2017a, 2017b). This paper will discuss and demonstrate how experimental philosophers (and especially an 'experimental philosophy 2.0') can recruit methods from psycholinguistics to study automatic inferences in language comprehension and production, with a view to assessing philosophically relevant intuitions and arguments.…”

“…One of them can be tried to implement learning activities using an analogy learning strategy. Students'critical thinking is still low and must be improved [7][8] The analogy is one of the learning strategies that can be applied in delivering topics in class. The analogy can be used to solve learning communication difficulties between teachers and students, especially when students had learning difficulties in understanding new teaching topics that have a similarity in the flow of thinking with previous teaching topics [9].…”

“…Previous research on critical thinking has been carried out relating to the effects of using various learning models [15,17,18]. In addition, research has also been carried out relating to the use of analogy learning strategy [8,9,19]. However, there is still little research that measures students' critical thinking using analogy learning strategy.…”

“…1 引言 人类如何理解抽象概念一直是认知语言学领 域的重点研究话题 (Borghi et al, 2017; 贺晓玲, 陈 俊 , 2020; 王 振 宏 , 姚 昭 , 2012)。 随 着 具 身 认 知 (embodied cognition)的兴起, 关于抽象概念如何表 征也迎来了认识论上的重大转变, 抽象概念需以具 体概念以及感知运动经验为基础, 才能得到习得和 理解, 而隐喻则是这个构建过程的内在心理机制 (Barsalou, 2008;Gibbs, 2006;Holyoak & Stamenković, 2018; 王锃, 鲁忠义, 2003;Wilson, 2002 (Bobro, 1999;阎书昌, 2011;Yu et al, (Casasanto & Bottini, 2014;Casasanto, 2017;Fischer, 2017;Holyoak & Stamenković, 2018;Pitt & Casasanto, 2020 (Amer et al, 2017;Hommel, 1998Hommel, , 2004Kahneman et al, 1992;Treisman, 1998) (Amer et al, 2017;Hommel, 1998Hommel, , 2004Kahneman et al, 1992;Treisman, 1998) Experiment 2a, the reaction time of participants in the lexical judgment task was also recorded. The results showed that the effect of metaphorical consistency, which was incomplete, was only in the deeper perceptual processing depth.…”
