Two Air Quality Regimes in Total Column NO2 over the Gulf of Mexico in May 2019: Shipboard and Satellite Views

Abstract: Three points-• Pandora NO 2 columns and surface O 3 , NO 2, CO and VOC measured on ship over the Gulf of Mexico, May 2019, displayed two air quality (AQ) regimes• Gulf of Mexico (GOM) AQ was dominated by continental NO 2 sources and near-shore VOC; deepwater oil platforms were in a clean marine regime• Pandora and satellite total column NO 2 over GOM agreed overall within 5% in clean, clear-sky conditions along the coast and 13% over water

“…The satellite footprint size at nadir is ∼13 × 24 km for OMI and 3.5 × 7.2 km for TROPOMI during field campaigns in 2018 through July 2019. In general, agreement of Pandora TC NO 2 is closer to TROPOMI than for OMI, especially if the larger satellite pixel includes considerable spatial heterogeneity (Thompson, 2020;Thompson et al, 2020). • At very polluted locations, as TC NO 2 measured from the surface increases, there tends to be greater disagreement with the corresponding satellite TC NO 2 (Herman et al, 2019).…”

“…Overpasses for both satellites occur early afternoon approximately between 1300 and 1400 LT. OMI operates with FOVs varying in size from ∼13 km × 24 km near nadir to ∼24 km × 160 km at the outermost edges of the swath, observing direct and back scattered solar radiation between 264 and 504 nm needed for retrieving NO 2 column (total, tropospheric, and stratospheric) densities (Boersma et al, 2011;Levelt et al, 2006Levelt et al, , 2018. NASA OMI NO 2 Standard Product, V3.1 (OMNO2 product; Krotkov et al, 2017), validated in Choi et al (2020), was available for preliminary reports on SCOAPE (Thompson, 2020;Thompson et al, 2020).…”

“…NASA and BOEM carried out a feasibility study from 2017 to 2020 to determine whether satellite data could be used to monitor NO 2 over the GOM and discriminate regional sources and/or resolve pollution from individual platforms. Preliminary results were summarized in two documents by Duncan (2020) and Thompson et al (2020). These were followed by detailed reports on a 2019 field campaign (Satellite Coastal and Oceanic Atmospheric Pollution Experiment), SCOAPE-I (Thompson et al, 2020(Thompson et al, , 2023, along the Louisiana coast.…”
