Twist drill craniostomy vs Burr hole craniostomy in chronic subdural hematoma: a randomized study

Abstract: Aim: To compare two most common operative procedures used in patients with chronic subdural hematomas -Twist drill craniostomy and Burr Hole Craniostomy. Material and Methods:The study was a prospective randomized controlled trial on patients with chronic subdural hematomas. Results: Both procedures are comparable with respect to outcome but surgical duration is statistically higher in Burr Hole craniostomy than Twist Drill Craniostomy. Conclusion: Twist Drill Craniostomy is procedure of choice in emergency su… Show more

“…Age, gender, and clinical status at admission are important determinants of clinical outcome after surgery. [14] In our study, the mean age in BHC and TDC groups were 61.39 ± 13.21 SD and 73.36 ± 10.82 SD, respectively. There were 76.19% male and 23.81% female in BHC group.…”

“…Seizure is also one of the surgical complications of evacuation of cSDH in our study it occurred in 2 patient (9.4%) and this is higher than the results of Jaiswal et al in a study on 41 patients underwent evacuation of cSDH using TDC which had no cases of postoperative seizures. while in the work of Rohde V et al on 376 patients operated using BHC (13.6%) exhibited postoperative seizures [24] [26].…”

“…[3][4] It is more frequent in the elderly population, where age-related reductions in brain volume with corresponding increases in the extent of the subdural space enhance vulnerability to this condition. 5 The major risk factor linked with around two-thirds of individuals with CSDHs is a history of head trauma, which is usually a minor trauma. [5][6] Some of the cases might be the result of a problematic coagulation system or those using antiplatelet medicines.…”
