Twin pregnancy with a fetus in each half of a uterus didelphys

Abstract: A rare case of a twin pregnancy with a fetus in each half of a uterus didelphys (double uterus, double cervix and septate vagina) is reported. A longitudinal vaginal septum and two portios were detected during the first labor of this patient. During her second pregnancy ultrasonography was performed in the 16th week, and pregnancy was detected in each half of the double uterus. Both fetuses were of similar size and corresponded to the gestational age. A completely separated double uterus was confirmed by ultra… Show more

“…Studies of the impact of MA on twin pregnancies were rarely done. To the best of our knowledge, only 14 case reports (Ahmad et al, 2000;Arora et al, 2007;Aruh et al, 2005;Brown, 1999;Check et al, 1992;Cruceyra et al, 2011;Doruk et al, 2013;Kekkonen et al, 1991;NahraLynch & Toffle, 1997;Nahum, 1997;Nanda et al, 2009;Nohara et al, 2003;Sugaya, 2010;Weissman et al, 2006), and one comparative study (Fox et al, 2014) examined the effect of MA on twin pregnancies to date. These studies also suggested that the presence of MA in twin pregnancies significantly increased the risks for negative reproductive outcomes, including cerclage, preterm birth, and lower birth weights and other obstetrical complications.…”

“…No estimates are available for the incidence of triplets in a uterus didelphys. However, it has been estimated that the spontaneous rate of occurrence of twins in a uterus didel phys is 1:1,000,000 [4], With increased utilization of assisted reproductive technologies, this problem will most likely be seen more frequently as is now true for the inci dence of triplets and quadruplets in otherwise normal uteri. We report a couple that chose multifetal pregnancy reduction of triplets complicated by a uterus didelphys.…”

“…The exact rate of occurrence of uterus didelphys is unknown, but most authorities suggest it is the least com mon of all the fusion anomalies. It has been estimated to range from 1:25,000 to 1:30,000 [4], Assisted reproductive technologies have made it possi ble for otherwise infertile couples to conceive. One of the consequences of this improved fertility is multiple gesta tion and, in particular, multiple gestations of 3 or more.…”
