Twenty years of FISH-based translocation analysis for retrospective ionizing radiation biodosimetry

Abstract: This technique is appropriate for corroborating a former IR exposure of individuals. When the radiation dose is greater than 1 Gy, the translocations in complex exchanges must be considered. Another relevant point is the use of an appropriate background yield of translocations. The dose assessment, however, also depends on exposure to various genotoxic agents besides IR. If no evidence about the existence of radiation exposure is available, dose assessment is not useful. For this reason, report only the transl… Show more

“…Further, information on past radiation exposure is critical without which retrospective radiation dose assessment may not be reliable. Gregoire et al [85] analyzed the blood samples of 42 patients with suspected past IR overexposure by FISH using a cocktail of three chromosomes (2, 4 and 12). Radiation dose estimated by chromosome translocation was significantly different from 0 Gy in 25 of the 42 cases and the lowest positive dose estimated was 0.3 Gy.…”

“…Stable aberrations may persist in the body for years and tend to accumulate during a lifetime. Therefore, translocation analysis is used as a biomarker for evaluating the received doses of ionizing radiation from past or chronic exposure [13]. FISH seems to be more sensitive than conventional chromosome analysis as was shown in medical personnel and in the study of environmental air pollution impact [14][15][16][17].…”
