Twenty-year Follow-up of Kangaroo Mother Care Versus Traditional Care

Abstract: BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Kangaroo mother care (KMC) is a multifaceted intervention for preterm and low birth weight infants and their parents. Short-and mid-term benefits of KMC on survival, neurodevelopment, breastfeeding, and the quality of mother-infant bonding were documented in a randomized controlled trial (RCT) conducted in Colombia from 1993 to 1996. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the persistence of these results in young adulthood.

“…For the smallest babies, humidity of 60–80% should be used initially and reduced as skin integrity improves. Kangaroo Mother Care (KMC) is an effective means of maintaining temperature and improving outcomes in lower income settings and is increasingly being used in NICU to maximise maternal-infant bonding even in ventilated babies with the potential for benefits beyond hospital discharge [156, 157]. …”

“…It can help premature infants regulate their heart rate, temperature and breathing and stabilize their organ function and improve self-regulation [18]. Kangaroo mother care has been shown to have significant, long-lasting social and behavioral protective effects 20 years after intervention [19]. Although this child is only three years old at this reporting, these benefits could have impacted his early development.…”

“…In an 18‐month follow‐up study of Lester's cohort, more maternal involvement in infant care during the neonatal period was associated with improved cognitive and language scores (Lester et al, ). KC has been studied extensively as an independent measure of maternal involvement in care of the premature infant and is widely known to be associated with improved neurodevelopmental outcomes (Charpak et al, ; Feldman & Eidelman, ; Feldman, Eidelman, Sirota, & Weller, ; Ludington‐Hoe et al, ; Scher et al, ).…”

“…Prolonged daily KC was also found to positively influence cerebral motor networks and synaptic efficacy up to 15 years of age (Schneider et al, ). Researchers have also documented improvements in behavior, social skills, and cognitive function as long as 20 years post‐KC experience in premature infants (Charpak et al, ). These robust findings about relationships between KC and neurodevelopment have particular significance for infants with CCHD who are at high risk for impaired neurodevelopment.…”
