This article is the second in a continuing series of general interest papers on the applications of microwaves in areas of science and technology that might not be appreciated by the traditional engineer. What more appropriate application could there be than the first wide-spread commercial use of microwaves for food preparation. This paper reports on RF sources that have been virtually prototyped with the Improved ConcurrentElectromagnetic Particle-in-Cell (ICEPIC) code. ICEPIC simulates from first principles (Maxwell's equations and Lorenz's force law) the electrodynamics and charged particle dynamics of the RF-producing part of the system. Our simulations focus on two classes of Lband sources: giga-watt, 100ns length pulse sources and 100s of kilo-watt long pulse sources (>100 milliseconds). Such simulations require enormous computational resources.These simulations successfully expose undesirable features of these sources and help us to suggest improvements.

The magnetron has survived in an era when most electron tubes have been replaced by solid‐state devices in modern electronic systems. A wide spectrum of related devices are being developed for specialized applications. These include crossed‐field amplifiers, voltage‐tuned magnetrons, beacon magnetrons, and relativistic magnetrons. Applications range from the classical radar through industrial heating to microwave weapons. Future applications remain unpredictable, but many are being explored. Advances in computer modeling will eventually produce success.
