Twenty four‐hour activity cycle in older adults using wrist‐worn accelerometers: The seniors‐ENRICA‐2 study

Abstract: Objectives This study aimed: (a) to provide a detailed description of sleep, sedentary behavior (SED), light physical activity (LPA), and moderate‐to‐vigorous physical activity (MVPA) over the complete 24‐hours period using raw acceleration data in older adults; and (b) to examine the differences in the 24‐hours activity cycle by sex, age, education, and body mass index (BMI). Methods Population‐based cohort comprising 3273 community‐dwelling individuals (1739 women), aged 71.8 ± 4.5 years, participating in th… Show more

“…These data confirm the sex differences among older adults reported in the literature [13]. However, our findings are not completely consistent with those of a previous population-based cohort study reporting that women had greater levels of light PA but lower levels of sedentary behavior and moderate-to-vigorous PA than men [21]. A systematic review analyzing the effects of PA levels on the activities of daily living in older adults found the largest health effects for moderate PA, concluding that moderate PA levels may produce the greatest benefits in performing the activities of daily living [22].…”

“…The Canadian Society for Exercise Physiology has identified 24-hour movement guidelines for children and youth, including recommendations for time spent sleeping, being physically active, participating in structured and unstructured walking activities, and sitting for recreational screen activities (22); however, similar 24-hour movement guidelines for adults have not been established. Despite the lack of guidelines informing 24-hour movement in adults, research-grade activity trackers worn for 24 hours over a period of days still offer an opportunity to understand different patterns of sleep and activity behavior (23)(24)(25). Understanding activity and sleep patterns over 24 hours is informative in a way that is different than measuring different intensities of activity or sleep in isolation.…”

“…We performed a cross-sectional analysis of data obtained from the Seniors-ENRICA-II (Study on Nutrition and Cardiovascular Risk in Spain) cohort, among 3,273 community-dwelling individuals aged 64 years or older residing in the city of Madrid and four surrounding towns: Alcalá de Henares, Alcorcón, Getafe, and Torrejón de Ardoz. This cohort followed the same design as the Seniors-ENRICA I [20]. The study participants were selected by random sampling sex-and district-stratified among all individuals with a national healthcare card between 2015 and 2017.…”
