Twenty-five years of conferences on the Ecology and Management of Alien Plant invasions: the history of EMAPi 1992–2017

Abstract: During the first 25 years, EMAPi conferences were attended by 1280 participants from 77 countries in five continents and produced 1474 presentations, including 44 keynotes on a broad range of aspects of plant invasion ecology. The series was established in Loughborough, UK, in 1992 and with its 14th conference in Lisbon, Portugal in 2017 it has become the longest held series of regular meetings in plant invasion ecology with the number of participants in the last decade ranging between 150 and 250 per meeting.… Show more

“…A series on the biology of invasive plants was recently initiated in the journal Invasive Plant Science and Management which encourages the formation of multi-national author teams from far-flung world regions, in order to adequately review the biology of invasive plants in a global context (Kriticos et al, 2020). Organizations which bring together invasive plant specialists from across the globe, such as EMAPi likewise have a vital role to play in understanding whether the dynamics of invasion by the same species differ in different world regions (Pyšek et al, 2019).…”

“…They noted that "there were numerous references in many sessions to South Africa's substantial and innovative contributions in the field" and that "there is no doubt that the small scientific community in South Africa has made its mark". Another important indicator is contributions to the biennial EMAPi (Ecology and Management of Alien Plant invasions) conferences (Pyšek et al 2020). A total of 1696 individual delegates from 77 countries attended one or more of the 14 EMAPi conferences held between 1992 and 2017.…”

“…A symposium on the management of cactus invasions was held in 2015 in Waikoloa Village, Hawaii, as part of the 13th International Conference on Ecology and Management of Alien Plant Invasions (EMAPi [25,26]). As a result of discussions during this symposium, and aiming to collect available information on cactus management worldwide, members of the IOBC GCWG developed a web-based questionnaire in English, French, Italian, Portuguese, and Spanish, and distributed it to all parts of the world known to have invasive cacti (Supplementary Material).…”
