Twelve Years and Twelve Thousand Multi-Stage Horizontal Wells in the Bakken - How is Industry Continuing to Increase the Cumulative Production Per Well?

Abstract: Multi-stage horizontal well designs have been used since 2007 in the Bakken oil-field of North Dakota. Since then over 12,000 wells have been completed in either the Middle Bakken or Three Forks zones. Early-time production rates as measured by 180-day state-reported cumulative production have increased 4-fold over this period as industry has pursued a program of innovation and continuous improvement in completions technology with production per well increasing in ten of the twelve years. Throug… Show more

“…This enabled a more profound understanding of critical drilling parameters such as weight on bit and torque. Pearson et al [16] discussed how technological advances have led to a substantial boost in oil production, even amidst falling oil prices and economic challenges. They highlighted how strategic changes in completion performance and well design, such as transitioning from Generation 1 to Generation 4 and then Generation 5 designs, significantly improved drilling returns.…”

“…Tight oil operators have promoted their abilities to increase production asserting that in the Bakken, "Early-time production rates" (that they base on 180-day state-reported cumulative production), "have increased 4-fold over [the last decade]" (Pearson et al, 2018). They ascribe this increase to field operator's "innovation and continuous improvement in completions technology" resulting in higher production per well, for ten out of the last twelve years.…”

“…We will show how the accuracy of estimating the recovery of future wells is key to making robust prediction of the total recoverable resource.
