Orthopaedic Residency Applicants' Perspective on Program-Based Social Media

Background: Social media and online resources have been used in graduate medical education for years. In addition to an official residency program website, many orthopaedic surgery programs have an established social media presence to interact, educate, and engage with prospective applicants. The role of social media in orthopaedic surgery has significantly expanded in recent years. Despite its increasing use, the specific impact of social media on orthopaedic surgery residency applicants remains unknown. Methods: Applicants to the home institution's orthopaedic surgery residency program were sent an optional online survey during the 2020 to 2021 application cycle. No incentive was provided in exchange for participation. Results: Of 812 orthopaedic surgery applicants, 650 (80%) completed the survey. Program-based social media is widely accessed by applicants. Instagram is used by most applicants (61.9%), and nearly a third (28.7%) rely on it as their main resource when researching prospective residency programs. The majority (66.9%) agreed that social media can be successfully used to inform and interact with applicants. Most of the applicants (60.6%) also reported that social media had a positive impact on their perception of the associated program. Only 5.7% of respondents indicated that social media had a negative influence. The most effective uses of social media seem to be in allowing a program to display its culture and transparency. Conclusion: Social media plays a substantial role in the orthopaedic surgery residency application process, and its use continues to grow. Programs can use it to effectively engage with and inform prospective applicants. The impact of social media is positive on most of the applicants. Instagram is the preferred social media platform used by applicants, and nearly one-third rely on it as their main resource when researching programs. Investing time and resources into a social media presence seems to be a worthwhile pursuit for orthopaedic surgery programs as an important piece to a wellrounded recruitment effort of modern orthopaedic surgery applicants.Disclosure: The Disclosure of Potential Conflicts of Interest forms are provided with the online version of the article (http://links.lww.com/JBJSOA/A383).

Purpose To evaluate the social media usage of orthopaedic residency programs, program directors (PDs), and department chairs across Instagram, Facebook, and Twitter and to determine which types of social media posts are indicative of increased user following. Methods A systematic online search strategy was performed in October 2020 to identify all allopathic orthopaedic surgery residency program accounts on Instagram, Facebook, and Twitter. Instagram posts were further analyzed to evaluate the type of post that significantly correlated with increased follower counts. Results Of 158 orthopaedic surgery programs, 69 (43.7%) had Instagram accounts, 52 (32.9%) had Facebook accounts, and 54 (34.2%) had Twitter accounts. Program presence on Instagram and Twitter continued to grow exponentially ( R 2 = 0.99 and R 2 = 0.95, respectively). Regarding program leadership, a total of 151 PDs and 156 chairs were identified. Of these, 21 PDs (14%) and 8 chairs (5.1%) had Instagram accounts. The number of posts and the numbers of educational, social, program information, and operative posts ( P < .01) significantly correlated with increased followers on Instagram. Conclusions Fewer than one-half of orthopaedic surgery residency programs and fewer than one-quarter of PDs and department chairs have a social media presence. However, the number of residency programs on social media continues to rise year-over-year. The total number of posts; the amount of educational, social, and program information; and the number of operative posts significantly correlated with increased followers on Instagram. Clinical Relevance With the growing prevalence of social media, orthopaedic surgery residency programs have the opportunity to connect with future applicants and disseminate informational content regarding their programs.

BackgroundTwitter has emerged as a powerful networking and educational tool within the health care community. The instantaneous and casual nature of Twitter allows for easy access to a near limitless pool of medical professionals and the opportunity to share intra‐ and interprofessional knowledge. Beyond individual development, Twitter has the potential to positively impact pharmacy residency programs in a multitude of ways.ObjectiveThis article serves as a practical guide for pharmacy residency programs to implement and maintain a successful Twitter account.RecommendationsAt the program level, a Twitter account creates an official voice and brand while simultaneously providing detail and perspective beyond what a residency website may offer. Additionally, it allows for dynamic ground‐level engagement with prospective residency candidates, current residents, and preceptors which is mutually beneficial to the program audience. In the age of virtual recruitment, successfully utilizing digital tools to meet candidates where they are is essential for attracting the right candidate for the program. Implementation of a successful social media strategy has potential barriers that include garnering buy‐in from departmental leadership, operationalizing a social media team, and maintaining engagement momentum.ConclusionPharmacy residency programs should consider starting an official Twitter account.
