“…Nicotine is usually presented to the fetus through maternal smoking or environmental exposure to second-hand smoke. Research has provided unequivocal evidence that active smoking and passive exposure to second-hand smoke can be teratogenic (for review, see 82), can lead to decreased birth weight and can increase the risks of preterm birth and SIDS (Table 1), all of which are high risk factors for behavioral impairment 69, 83-85. Numerous studies support a robust relationship between developmental tobacco smoke exposure and attention deficit disorders, hyperactivity, antisocial behavior and learning disabilities 86-94.…”

“…Neurofunctional assessment at 12 months of extremely low birth weight infants born in 1996-2001, along with magnetic resonance imaging status and chronic lung disease, predicted cognitive function at 36 months (Gianni et al 2007). Children born <26 weeks in 1995 had a mean mental developmental index of 84 and a psychomotor developmental index of 87 at 30 months; 49% had cognitive or neurologic disability and 23% were severely disabled .…”

“…Exclusion criteria were the multiple birth, the presence of genetic abnormalities, severe neurofunctional impairment (defined as Neurofunctional Assessment > 2, Picciolini et al, 2006; Gianní et al, 2007), and/or neurosensory disabilities (blindness, deafness). We decided such exclusion criteria because having fine motor control and sensory orientation was a prerequisite for undergoing the cognitive assessment we administered.…”
