Tweeting Cameras for Event Detection

Abstract: We are living in a world of big sensor data. Due to the widespread prevalence of visual sensors (e.g. surveillance cameras) and social sensors (e.g. Twitter feeds), many events are implicitly captured in real-time by such heterogeneous "sensors". Combining these two complementary sensor streams can significantly improve the task of event detection and aid in comprehending evolving situations. However, the different characteristics of these social and sensor data make such information fusion for event detection… Show more

“…Textual and multimedia content both have different paradigms of mining techniques, and to date, researchers have paid fewer attentions to multimode content analysis in Twitter. A few studies use text and images to detect events [8,111]. One possible reason for this could be that support for images and videos has recently been integrated into Twitter, and much of the research work is focused on textual content and its social aspects.…”

“…A method for translating multiple languages into a uniform language may help to increase the performance. Similarly, non-text based features [111] or the fusion of text and multimedia features [8] would also be useful to extract event-related contextual information.…”

“…Social media has become a prevalent way for people to communicate mundane details of their daily lives [41,70]. Posts on dining experiences (i.e., posts with photos of food with or without text descriptions) in particular constitute a formidable part of such communications [60].…”

“…Recent work has showcased how visual sensors (in the form of CCTV cameras) and social sensors (such as Twitter feeds) can be combined to improve event detection and aid in understanding the evolution of situations [70]. The rapid growth and ubiquity of mobile devices has resulted in making participatory sensing feasible on a large scale [7].…”
