Tutoring for retention

Abstract: Peer tutoring is a simple, low-cost intervention that can be implemented in CS1/2 courses. It is hypothesized that peer tutoring helps students build a sense of community, succeed in course work, and build confidence to take further courses in the major. This paper examines the latter two hypotheses by examining the predicted and actual behavior of students in CS1/2. Course performance improvements were observed, which also strongly influence retention in computing-related courses. The measures also point to f… Show more

“…Surprisingly, they did not find a linear correlation between the exam grade and the social well-being and emotional health of the students. Recently, Joseph and Suzanne [2] examined peer tutoring's influence on students' performance in CS1 and CS2 courses. They found indications that peer tutoring had a positive impact on a students' course performances, but did not have a significant impact on the course final exam grades.…”

“…The ability to predict individual or group success in exams and courses has been researched in the past four decades [1,2]. Accurately predicting students' exam or course grades has the potential to help students in various ways; by using accurate predictions we can detect early on students who have difficulties with the course materials and help them to improve.…”

“…The tutor is needed to help the students gain a sense of achievement and also to support those learners, who are more oriented towards verbal communication in their sensory preferences. As shown by Cottam et al [17], peer tutors are well suited for this task. They found in their study of the effect of peer tutoring in CS1/2 significant differences in the exam grades and consider peer tutoring as an intervention to improve performance and retention in computer-related courses.…”

“…The peer tutors in this case are not students who are taking the same classes as the tutees. The intention of these peer tutoring programs is to provide general support to a computer science program, or even to an entire college for the purpose of increasing student retention [20,21,22,23,24]. The peer tutors are not evaluated for their learning performance in a particular subject as the result of being tutors, which in essence, do not conform to learning-by-teaching.…”
