Turtle-Associated Human Salmonellosis

Abstract: A patient who bred exotic turtles as a hobby presented with 2 episodes of severe diarrhea, the second of which was proven to be caused by turtle-associated salmonellosis that was contracted during treatment with a proton-pump inhibitor. The literature about reptile-associated salmonellosis is briefly reviewed.

También se detectaron conductas que ponen en contacto al niño con la microbiota del hocico del animal, así como el hábito de algunos niños de comer alimento de mascotas.…”

“…Thus, the number of diagnostic samples for bacteriological tests from living, but also perished reptiles increased automatically. In humans, although most reports of reptile-associated salmonellosis are from babies and children, there are also reports from adults, especially immunocompromised hosts, and furthermore in patients with impaired gastric acid production (Stam et al 2003). Clinical signs in humans include gastroenteritis, but also more serious such as septicemia, meningitis, and subdural empyema (Chiodini and Sundberg 1981) might occur (Tabarani et al 2010;Van Meervenne et al 2009).…”
