Turning ultraviolet-green into red light in transparent phosphate glasses for greenhouses

Abstract: Sb3+/Mn2+ co-doped phosphate glasses were prepared by high temperature melting method. The absorption, excitation, and emission spectra of the glasses were investigated. The glasses are transparent in the visible light region and can emit strong red light under 275, 360, 415, or 520 nm excitation. Under 275 nm excitation, the emission colors of the glasses can vary from blue to red with the increasing of Mn2+ ion concentration. The materials will be helpful in developing glass greenhouse for the green plants.

“…The materials were prepared with the following composition (in mol%): 40SiO 2 -20Al 2 O 3 -15LiF-(15Àx)YF 3 -(10Ày)Ga 2 O 3 -xREF 3 450°C pre-heated copper mold to form the precursor glass (denoted as PG). The as-quenched glass was annealed at 550°C for 2 h and then cooled down naturally to room temperature to relinquish the inner stress.…”

“…Plants need only light energy, CO 2 , and H 2 O to make sugar, and the photosynthesis takes place in the chloroplasts, specifically using chlorophylls [2]. Chlorophylls look green because it mainly absorbs blue and red light, meaning that the energy from the absorbed blue and red light is, thereby, able to be used to realize photosynthesis [3,4]. In the solar spectrum, the energy percentages of the ultraviolet (UV), visible, and infrared (IR) light are 7%, 50%, and 43%, respectively [5,6].…”

“…Moreover, the plastic films can cause white pollution which is a serious pollution all around the world. To solve this problem, the glass greenhouses with good light transmittance, thermal retardation, and long service life, have been given deep concern [5][6]. For the host materials, the glass ceramics are more promising because they not only have the merits of the glass, but also contain nano-size crystallite phases that can improve the optical properties without loss of transparency.…”

“…Longer To promote the growth of the green plants, the plastic greenhouses are generally used when the temperature is low. However, the poor transparency of the plastic hinders the photosynthesis of the green plants [5][6]. Moreover, the plastic films can cause white pollution which is a serious pollution all around the world.…”

“…Rare earth (RE 3+ ) ions doped optical materials have attracted great attentions for their promising applications in laser, solid-state lighting, optical telecommunication, sensor, biolabel and solar cells etc [1][2][3][4][5][6][7][8]. In order to achieve desirable optical performance, the host materials, where RE 3+ ions reside, should be appropriately selected because the radiative/nonradiative transitions as well as energy transfer of RE 3+ ions are highly dependent on the environment surrounding them [9][10][11][12].…”
