Turning on the Antimicrobial Activity of Gold Nanoclusters Against Multidrug‐Resistant Bacteria**

Abstract: In this work, we show that the addition of thiourea (TU) initiated broad-spectrum antimicrobial activity of otherwise inactive D-maltose-capped gold nanoclusters (AuNC-Mal). For example, AuNC-Mal/TU was effective against multidrug-resistant Pseudomonas aeruginosa with a minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) of 1 μg mL À 1 (2.5 μM [Au]) while having 30-60 times lower in vitro cytotoxicity against mammalian cells. The reaction of AuNC-Mal and TU generated the antimicrobial species of [Au(TU) 2 ] + and smaller A… Show more

“… , The reaction was carried out at room temperature, giving Tre-Cz in 60% yield (Scheme ). The corresponding Mal-Cz was synthesized in the same manner as Tre-Cz by coupling IV with an amine-derivatized Mal ( VI , Scheme S2) in 73% yield (Scheme ). The structure of Tre-Cz was confirmed by 1 H NMR (Figures S50 and S51), IR (Figure S52), 19 F NMR (Figure S53), 13 C NMR (Figure S54), 2D COSY NMR (Figure S55), and high-resolution mass spectrometry (Figure S56).…”

“…Furthermore, AuNCs have exhibited antibacterial mechanisms of photodynamic therapy (PDT) and photothermal therapy (PTT). Therefore, AuNCs have strong antibacterial activity against a wide range of bacterial strains, including both gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria, MDR bacteria, and even bacterial biofilms [ 90 , 91 , 92 , 93 , 94 ].…”
