Diptera, with their participation in pollination, significantly contribute to the maintenance of plant diversity, and they also have great potential for assessing habitat health and preserving it. A decline in their abundance and diversity has been recorded worldwide as a consequence of biotic, abiotic, and anthropic alterations. In addition to pollinators, these orders include agricultural and forestry pests, which are a threat to both cultivated and wild plants that are very important to the economy. Many pests have escaped from their native areas, and it is important to monitor their spread to implement sustainable means of control. Our study provides baseline information on Diptera and Vespidae diversity in the Mediterranean mosaic of agroecosystems, giving information on the importance of human influence on insect diversity. We carried out an insect inventory in Istria, Croatia, using a set of traps placed in the proximity of beehives. This study was also important in determining the presence of pests and newly introduced species. A total of 94 species from 24 families were recorded—7 important agricultural pests of Diptera and 17 new records for Croatia. The correlation between species diversity and environmental and anthropogenic factors leads to the conclusion that total insect species richness, pest species richness, and the first findings depend on human activities. The number of honeybee colonies negatively correlated with species richness, while anthropic influence positively affected total and pest species richness.

New faunistic data on Diptera (Hexapoda, Insecta) from the Ziarat Juniperus forest ecosystem (Pakistan)

This study presents the first faunistic record and DNA barcoding for some Diptera species recorded from the Juniperus forest ecosystem of Balochistan, Pakistan. DNA barcoding was used to explore species diversity of Dipterans and collections carried out using a Malaise trap between December 2018 to December 2019. This process involved sequencing the 658 bp Cytochrome Oxidase I (COI) gene. Amongst the collected Diptera specimens, nine families were identified, representing 13 genera. These species include Atherigona soccata (Rondani, 1871), Atherigona varia (Schiner, 1868), Chironomus dorsalis (Meigen, 1818), Eupeodes corollae (Linnaeus, 1758), Eristalis tenax (Linnaeus,1758), Gonia ornata (Meigen, 1826), Lucilia sericata (Meigen, 1826), Paragus quadrifasciatus (Linnaeus, 1758), Pollenia rudis (Fabricius, 1794), Ravinia pernix (Thompson, 1869), Sarcophaga dux (Thompson, 1869), Trupanea amoena (Schiner, 1868) and Wohlfahrtia bella (Linnaeus, 1758). The families Syrphidae and Sarcophagidae exhibited the highest representation, each comprising three genera and three species. They were followed by the family Muscidae, which had a single genus and two species. Anthomyiidae, Chironomidae, Calliphoridae, Polleniidae, Tachinidae and Tephritidae were represented by only one genus and one species. A nique Barcode Index Number (BIN) was allotted to Tachinidae (specie i.e Gonia ornata). The results indicated that barcoding through cytochrome oxidase I is an effective approach for the accurate identification and genetic studies of Diptera species. This discovery highlights the significant diversity of this insect order in study region. Furthermore, a comprehensive list of other Diptera species remains elusive because of difficulties in distinguishing them, based on morphology and a lack of professional entomological knowledge.

Küresel ısınmanın etkileri 40 yıldır dünyada ve Türkiye'de artarak canlıların biyocoğrafik alanlarının giderek genişlemesine neden olmuştur. Bazı zararlılar ekolojik alanlarını genişletirken bazı istilacı zararlıların kendilerine uygun yeni ekolojik alanlara taşındığı tespit edilmiştir. Doğu Akdeniz Bölgesi'nin tarım alanlarında son 40 yılda 25'ten fazla zararlı tür tespit edilmiş ve bunların bir kısmı varlığını bile hissettirmemişken, Parabemisia myricae, Tuta absoluta, Drosophila suzukii gibi türler salgınlara neden olmuştur. Bu istilacı türler, doğal düşman baskısının olmadığı zamanlarda salgın yaparak ekonomik açıdan önemli kayıplara neden olmuştur. Bazı türler biyolojik kontrol ve diğer bitki koruma uygulamaları ile kontrol altına alınmıştır. Tarım alanlarındaki kontrolsüz insan faaliyetleri, yetersiz karantina önlemleri ve küresel iklim değişikliği nedeniyle farklı coğrafi bölgelerde yaşayan zararlılar, hastalıklar ve yabancı otlar yeni bölgelere taşınabilmekte ve yeni bölgelerde potansiyel zararlıdan ana zararlıya dönüşebilmektedir. Ulusal ve Uluslararası Karantina Kurumları, bu istilacı türlerin yayılmasının önlenmesi ve yavaşlatılması için kalıcı çözüm sağlamak için koordineli bir şekilde çalışmalıdır.
