Tuning upconversion emission by controlling particle shape in NaYF4:Yb3+/Er3+ nanocrystals

Abstract: Rod-shaped and plate-shaped NaYF4:Yb3+/Er3+ nanocrystals (NCs) have been synthesized via a facile oleic acid-assisted hydrothermal route. The intensity and color tunability by shape controlling of NCs is demonstrated by up and down frequency conversions in NaYF4:Yb3+/Er3+ NCs. The results obviously show that rod-shaped NCs present much stronger upconversion luminescence intensity and smaller ratio of green to red emission intensity than that of plate-shaped NCs. The underlying reason of luminescence enhancemen… Show more

“…6 that the red emission intensity is very low, and green emission stands highly prominent. In general, phosphors codoped with Er 3 and Yb 3 show good red emission intensity along with green emission [39,40]. Reduced red emission is a rare case and not observed usually from Er 3 ∕Yb 3 -doped samples.…”

“…3(f) Fig. 4(a-b) and briefly described as follows [35][36][37][38][39]: first, the electron of Yb 3+ is excited from levels 2 F 7/2 to 2 F 5/2 under the 980 nm excitation. Then, the energy of the excited electron is transferred to Er 3+ , In the LiYF 4 and LiLuF 4 MC synthesis process, the EDTA is employed as a chelator to control particle size and morphology.…”
