Tuning the size and the photocatalytic performance of gold nanoparticles in situ generated in photopolymerizable glycomonomers

Abstract: Polymer nanocomposites containing Au NPs in situ photogenerated during the UV-curing process were prepared starting from methacrylated glycomonomers with α-d-glucofuranose or d-mannitol structural units, other mono(di)methacrylates and AuCl3.

“…In a manner analogous to [ 59 ], the photocatalytic activity of the synthesized hybrid films was evaluated following the degradation of phenol, hydroquinone or dopamine in aqueous solutions under ambient conditions and UV–visible irradiation. A piece of each composite film (1 g) was added into 50 mL of phenol (1.06 × 10 −3 M) or hydroquinone/dopamine (0.5 × 10 −3 M) aqueous solutions.…”

“…The photodegradation parameters for o-nitro-phenol decomposition are similar to those determined for phenol. This study underlined that, even in the absence of the crystalline TiO 2 phase, but in appropriate combination with other conducting elements (SiO 2 phase and Ag/Au NPs), the proposed materials acted as good catalyst capable to eliminate phenol derivatives from the system nearly completely after 350 min of UV irradiation [53].…”

“…Polymer nanocomposite films prepared by in situ photogeneration of gold nanoparticles in tandem with the photopolymerization process of methacrylated glycomonomers with d-glucofuranose or D-mannitol structural units that were reported by our group [53]. The nanocomposites were synthesized by a simple, efficient, cheap, and eco-friendly method that allow the achieving of flexible free-standing films active in the photocatalytic degradation of MB and MO dyes in aqueous phase under visible light irradiation at ambient temperature.…”

“…AuNP was chosen as it has remarkable catalytic efficiency and has been used profusely in prior studies. [15][16][17][18][19] Using NiNP in the nanocomposite provide means for easy magnetic separation and might also enhance the catalytic activity. For the fabrication of these nanocomposites, two core-shell structures were synthesized using bare NiNPs and graphene-coated NiNPs (Ni-G) as the core and polydopamine (PD) as the shell.…”
